Finally i looked up the stem game Goldin-Korzubov (Dushanbe 1980), see https://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-a ... s-position. Black settled for an early f4 and finally reached this position:
[d]8/8/6p1/3p4/kppN1p2/2P2P1P/1PR3PK/q7 w - - 0 36
White in zugzwang tried the cunning 36.g3 and black answered with 36...g5.
Retrospective i believe currently this might be an error. Instead the simple 36...fxg3+ followed by a march of the king back to the kingside seemingly would have won.
Now white played 37.g4! and the problem now is, despite the fact that he looses h3 there is still no way for the king to invade. The game continued and finally this position was reached:
[d]8/8/8/3p2p1/kppN1pP1/2Pq1P2/1PR2K2/8 b - - 0 44
Black tried the spectacular 44...Qxc2+ and after 45.Nxc2 bxc3 46.bxc3 Kb3 47.Nb4? he won with 47...d4. Instead 47.Nd4 is an easy draw (if you have stockfish). If the king is on the g-file, the queen sacrifice really wins, but stockfish couldn't figure it out in time how to force that.

[d]8/8/8/3p2p1/kppN1pP1/2Pq1P2/1PR2K2/8 b - - 0 44

In this position 44...Qd1 wins (but not 44...Qxc2+? 45.Nxc2 draw). Since after 45.Kg2 both 45...Qxc2+ and even 45...Qxd4 are winning, white plays 45.Re2 Qc1 46.Rc2 Qa1 and zugwang again, e.g. 47.Kg2 Qe1 48.Re2 Qc1 49.Rc2 Qxc2+ and wins. And after 47.Ne2 Kb3 white collapses.

So the current verdict is, that black played very well until move 44...Qxc2?.

Number of pawns is intact, besides knight outpost is atleast worth one pawn in positional compensation for the material deficit.

I read somewhere that rook & knight need two pawns to equalize the queen.

OK, black won that experimental game. But white made it all to easy with 19.g3 and 21.h4.
Also i don't like 2...g5. This is scary, since it allows a further defense idea with g4 and Kg2. Say instead of 19.g3 i play 19.Re2 (say) Qb1 and now 20.g4
[d]8/5p2/p2k4/1p1p2p1/2pN2P1/P1P2P1P/1P2R2K/1q6 b - - 0 20
Can stockfish navigate to the win from here on?

It might be a draw now. At least it is comparatively difficult. Consider this position:
[d]8/5p2/8/3p2p1/kppN2P1/2Pq1P2/1PR2K2/8 w - - 1 1
After 1.Kg2 bxc3 2.bxc3 Qxc2 does not work anymore (and stockfish shows nothing else), since after 4.Nxc2 Kb3 white has 5.Ne3 with draw. And 2...Qxd4 does not work either (but after 1.Kg1 it does, so beware).

Now consider this:
[d]8/5p2/3k4/3p2p1/1ppN2P1/2Pq1P2/1PR2K2/8 b - - 0 1
After 1...Ke5 2.Re2 Kf4?? it follows 3.Re8 and white wins with 4.Ne2+. This works also with the king on g2. Therefore black can not intrude over f4 either.

Oliver Roese the way i see it

This endgame is very complex, and it is not easy to draw conclusions. Only with very strong computer hardware.

We considered it to be engine draw, but i'm not so sure anymore.

It is not easy to form any plans without assistance from computers.

The general thought is that CALCULATION is the most important thing in endings...which is why trainers use them so much. One would think that engines would excel in many endgames.

Who here is using Fritz GUI with active playchess subscription?

It is possible to conduct a match over network in this spesific position.

Reply or send me PM if interested.

Hi Jon!

Here's a game I did let play an overaggressive SugaR-setting with reduced LMRs against latest Brainfish.
Both had 12 threads ponder on with 8G hash, TC was 120'+30" for the first 37 moves without tbs, then 90+30 with full Syzygys.

That SugaR made the full point here for Black, of course doesn't mean Black has a forced win, but considering the setting would perform lower in balanced positions than default, I think White has the more difficult task to hold that than Black has to win, as far as it's about eng-eng-game only.

Yet the question remains, if White was just clueless about its own pawn- moves right from the very start and so lost the chance to build up a fortress in the early stage.

Here's a game I did let play an overaggressive SugaR-setting with reduced LMRs against latest Brainfish.
Both had 12 threads ponder on with 8G hash, TC was 120'+30" for the first 37 moves without tbs, then 90+30 with full Syzygys.
What GUI do you use for the moment. I'm very interested in an network match in this position, taking advantage of ponder.

If you have fritz GUI with playchess subscription then we can try.
