Analysing with Ryzen - temperatures ?

Post by Ponti »

If I get a Ryzen computer to analyse 24/7 a position from the opening, using all 8 cores to the engine, how hot will the processor get ?

I don't have a Ryzen, but I have three Amd-fx 8350 that work 24x7. With a good fan they can work withouth problems, unless the air temperature is like 27c or more, when I reduce the number of cores used.

It depends on the ambient temperature and the cooling i guess.

If you are looking for the max, internal, cpu temperature, there are rumors about 95°C,

https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/5 ... peratures/

TDP for 1800X is given with 95 Watt,

http://www.overclockers.com/amd-ryzen-7 ... pu-review/

as far as i understood, the turbo boost depends on the cpu temperature,
so with a better cooling you could be able to squeeze more juice out of it.

In my circle of friends, and here in the forum, are every summer repeatedly reports of over heating problems due to high ambient temperatures...

my air cooled gpu machine encounters problems when temperatures rise above 30°C

I guess most users won't use the computer 24x7 running all cores at maximum, like when analysing a position (infinite analysis) using aquarium/IDEA, chessbase or other GUIs.

The trouble is how HOT the processor really gets while analysing 24h ?

Do Intel i7s run colder while doing the same job ?

In physics there is a pretty basic concept called thermal equilibrium, which essentially means that amount of heat generated by CPU is equal to the amount of heat released by the coolers. So once you start running your CPU at maximum TDP it reaches thermal equilibrium in 10-15mins. This means that it doesn't matter whether you run it for 15mins or 15 days it will behave the same i.e. maintain the same temperature assuming the environment temperature or load doesn't change.
If you don't overclock and have good cooler running CPU constantly at maximum TDP should also yield temperature in the acceptable range running it practically forever (or for couple of years at least).

I own a Ryzen 1700 and must say that I am very content about the heat production (and the noise)! TDP is also only 65 Watt.

My new PC under (cpu) load is about as noisy as my previous one being idle

Edit: stock cooler btw

I have five machines that are usually running at 100% load 24/7. They do generate a fair amount of heat, but they are within safe operating range. They all have decent cooling, especially the ones I custom built.

Do you use water or air cooling ?

Only air.
