Re: SSEChess ... try this engine!!
Hi Aloisio,
I like to play with older Zarkov versions, SSEChess, Tjes, AnMon, older Phalanx versions. SSEchess is a very interesting engines (older Winboard program). I played all the years around 150 games vs. SSEChess ... I think ELO on modern Hardware is around 2.100!
The older MS Dos Version of Zarkov ... please use here 2.51 (not 2.50, 2.60, 2.61). Most interesting style and great chess. Can be found in my download selection!
With Ruffian you can select a level. Works fine and good tested in the time we released the project. For some days I gave Ruffian free. One of my wishes for the release version and Per-Ola do that. Pharaon versions have a nice UCI chess teacher. An UNI project from younger French people the programmer Frank ZIBI gave his Support at this time.
Best
Frank

it has a Play by ELO/UCI Limit Strength feature - start off at the lowest level and work you way up - you select any ELO from 1725 to 2825 - the lowest rating starts at about 32 nodes per second (nps), the highest level is over 60,000 nps. For every 100 ELO increase it will see twice as many nps. There is a random factor to vary the number of nodes from move to move plus or minus 25% for the level selected. You can select any ELO rating from 1725 to 2825 ( over 1000 levels) - it ELO increase will raise the nps by ~1.007% . 1.007^100 = ~2 - so the playing strength differences between ratings will very similar to differences in ratings in the world real world. You just find the right level for you - but you have 1100 to choose from. ;>)
The highest level is comparable top playing a $3500 Revelation chess computer with the stockfish engine - people say that would be over 2900, I'm not sure.
This game below was played at the weakest level (1725) = it may be weaker than 1725 real world rating - but it doesn't take long to see a difference . Level 2225 may be the right level for you - SF will see about 1000 nps at that level and it's probably just a tad under Master level.

edit - the reason why SF so played so weak above is that I left threads set to 18 - please be sure to set threads to 1 when playing with the UCI Limit Strength - I thought something was odd ...the level 1725 does play stronger than what it showed above with thread set to 1. I realized the setting error when I saw the evals were only one depth after posting the game.

I have been collecting engines similar to the range you're looking for. Here's the data I've found - they are computer ratings as opposed to human ratings, but it's a start.

Re: Sparring partner for a 2000 ELO player ?
I actually wrote an article about engine training partners http://chessncognac.com/5-best-chess-en ... ers-u1600/
I called it "for players under 1600" but should probably edit it, since I'm around 2200 and found all of these guys to give me a nice fight.
Frank, thanks for your suggestions too, I'll check them out myself.

Re: Sparring partner for a 2000 ELO player ?
Arasan has variable strength. It supports the UCI_Elo option when run in a UCI GUI such as Arena or Fritz. In Winboard mode or when using its native Windows GUI, it sets strength on a scale of 0-100. 2000 ELO would be roughly about a strength setting of 60.

All 'C1' entries should be around that range.
(The link is e.g. given in the footer of my posts.)

Try a recent version of Komodo, limiting depth to 3 ply.
