You are projecting, as you are the one distorting the facts. Last posting about this subject, as you are obviously too stubborn to come up with facts (and you even claim that your analysis is better than Aronian in the Aronian-Carlsen game).

Example 1: French defense (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Bb4)
Many engines, including Komodo and SF - see the matches played by Bram - now prefer 4.exd5, which after 4... exd5 leads to a dull, symmetrical position with not many chances to go wrong. High probability of a draw. If you add 4.e5 to this line, the position becomes closed and more complex. Or even better: 4.e5 c5 5.a3 Bxc3 6.bxc3, which adds themes like doubled pawns, pair of bishops and blocked center. Obviously the latter positions are more complex and thus have a higher probability of mistakes.

Conclusion: the longer line has better chances to have a decisive result AND leads to more interesting play.

Example 2: Scotch (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4)
For some reason - see again Bram's matches - both Komodo and Stockfish now go for the extremely dull exchange feast 3... exd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nxc6 bxc6 6.Bd3 d5 7.Qe2 dxe4 8.Nc3 Bb4 9.Bxe4 Bxc3 10.bxc3 Nxe4 11.Qxe4 Qe7, with almost zero winning chances and a boring game as a result. So it is better to extend this line with 3... exd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nxc6 bxc6 6.e5 Qe7 7.Qe2. This line is more complicated, keeps the queens on and poses the question 'how will engines complete their development'. More chances to go wrong here.

Conclusion: the longer line has better chances to have a decisive result AND leads to more interesting play.

Example 3: Ruy Lopez (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 f5)
This one is from TCEC superfinal 9. Unfortunately, Stockfish now chose 4.Nc3, which is weaker than 4.d3 and which allowed Houdini to equalize easily. It led to a boring game. Thus, extending the line with 4.d3 (which was also played by Houdini) leads to a more complex game and higher chances to go wrong. The game confirmed this, as Houdini's white game was far more interesting than Stockfish's white game.

Conclusion: the longer line has better chances to have a decisive result AND leads to more interesting play.

I can go on and on, but probably now you will finally grasp that "shorter book lines will lead to more wins and more interesting play" is just hogwash, without looking at the positions.

So once again, as I said many times: it is the POSITION that counts, NOT the number of moves.

And when the position is the most important thing, where you have to set the engines problems, who cares about the number of moves?

In a LTC match a la TCEC the number of draws will obviously increase significantly, maybe there is someone on this forum with strong hardware who'd like to try this out.
Well perhaps but now at 5 times longer time control 15m10s and 14cpu(!) it makes no difference
as with the match pedantfish 170426 versus K10.4 no lesser draws after 10 games but again allready +4 with 6 draws for the fish
after 35 games I have +13, 22 draws and yet not a single loss for asmfish170522 which means 68,5%
after 50 games half way now: +15 - 1 =34 so 64% for asmfish170522
(btw I miscounted in previous post after 35 games not +13 but +12)

After 70 games +17 -2 =51 at TC 15m10s 14cpu
After 70 games at TC 3m2s it was +18 -3 =49
So just 2 more draws after 70 games with 5 times longer time control

still 30 games to go with ~45min for a game

Besides this fact 8 wins are won from both sides of the board by asmFish, underlining its supremacy
When replaying these games one gets the impression of better use and understanding of the power of the pawns
See first two games played with Kings Indian, the black Richter Rauzer and both Taimanov Sicilians

Jeroen wrote:This is only blitz, in which games are more tactical and you get more decisive results. Besides, the other reason this set produces quite a lot of wins, is the inclusion of short lines that engines will never play themselves (and they also do not particularly like them).

Match at 15m 10s on the AMD Ryzen 1800 14cpu (7cores, 14threads) has ended in a +24 -5 =71 victory, 59,5% for asmfish170522
Draws compared to TC 3m2s increased +6 from 65 to 71 Komodo scored 5 wins 4 white 1 black.
Asmfish 24 of which 6 with black and 6 wins where from both sides of the board and off course two of these where with the KID :-)
(see topic at CCG http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=64240)
A lot of entertaining play despite the ultrashort lines sharp games where played

This is a nice tactical game. In the final position 26.gxf3 Bxg1 27.Kxg1 Rxd5 28.exd5 Qe3+ 29.Kh1 Qxf3+ leads to a perpetual. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if this all has been played before.

this is quite intresting to me ! I am always intrested including openings in my testset for engine matches. Actually I have a 50 possition set (=100games) which contains a mix of engine games with long timecontrolls and "rented" possitions from Jeroen Noomen testsets.

keep on your good work , Jeroen :D

Jeroen wrote:You are projecting, as you are the one distorting the facts.

Another Botwinnik Semi-Slav by Stockfish, but this time it is unable to save black's position. Nice game.
