Possible highest rated players of all time list.

Post by Leo »

"In an article [34] published by the ICGA Journal, Jean-Marc Alliot of the Toulouse Computer Science Research Institute (IRIT) presents a new method, based on a Markovian interpretation of a chess game. Starting with those of Wilhelm Steinitz, all 26,000 games played since then by chess world champions have been processed by a supercomputer using Stockfish (rated between 3310 ELO at the CCRL and 3337 at the SSDF as of 10/2015, but around 3150 under the test condition according to the authors)[35] in 62000 CPU hours, in order to create a probabilistic model for each player. For each position, the model estimates the probability of making a mistake, and the magnitude of the mistake by comparing the two best moves calculated at an average of 2 minutes by move (26 plies on the average) with the move actually played, [36] starting from move number 10.[37] These models can then be used to compute the win/draw/lose probability for any given match between two players. The predictions have proven not only to be extremely close to the actual results when players have played concrete games against one another, they also fare better than those based on ELO scores. The results demonstrate that the level of chess players has been steadily increasing. Magnus Carlsen (in 2013), tops the list, while Bobby Fischer (in 1971) is third, and Garry Kasparov (in 2001) is fourth. The complete database of the chess games and their evaluations can be downloaded from the page presenting this work on the author's website."

I am surprised to see Lasker in the list because I remember that he said that you need not to play the best move but the most unpleasant move for the opponent.

If Lasker is number 13 in all time list
and today strong players like  Fabiano Caruana or  Wesley So are not in the list
then it seems that the level of players did not increase significantly.

Wasn't it just "world champions" that made the list? Of course, Khalifman, Kasimdzhanov and Ponomariov were only FIDE shootout "champs", but the others are legit.

Ofc that players from this decade would have much higher "rating" on this list, 30% of their moves are SF moves after all.
Another IG nobel type of "research"...

All measurements reflect the behavior of measuring means.
I am afraid this list shows only the order of rank how much degree the play of word champs similar to play of Stockfish.

All of current top chess players use engines - mostly Stockfish.
So it is obvious to me most of them precede old champs on this list.

Karpov defeated Annand in a Championship match so there is a discrepancy right there.
