Queen and pawn endgame

Post by Maxwell86 »

The following position occured in the game Dominguez Perez - Michiels (2010):

[d]6k1/1p3pp1/p6p/7P/3Q2P1/5P2/PPPK4/5q2 b - - 2 35

For humans it is intuitively clear that the pawn ending after 35....Qxf3 36.Qd8+ Kh7 37.Qd3+ should be winning for white: a centralized king and a pawn majority at the queen side.
However, Stockfish 8 thinks 35....Qxf3 is the best move for black, only at a high depth, it prefers 35....Qg2+.

After 35....Qxf3 36.Qd8+ Kh7 37.Qd3+ Qxd3, both recaptures win for white.

[d]8/1p3ppk/p6p/7P/6P1/3q4/PPPK4/8 w - - 0 38

Curiously, even in this position, Stockfish 8 needs a high depth to realize that 38.Kxd3 wins.

Just wanted to share this position!

Thanks for sharing. :)

You are right. Engines takes some time to see W wins. I tried with AsmFish, and its choice is 38.cxd3, but after a while.

Code: Select all

FEN: 8/1p3ppk/p6p/7P/6P1/3q4/PPPK4/8 w - - 0 38

Re: Queen and pawn endgame

Post by Maxwell86 »

I wonder, is this common for pawn endings?
Some pawn races can be quite deep, which might explain why an engine needs some time to calculate them. But at the same time, these lines are quite forced, which would limit the branches of the search.

If you want to see a really complicated pawn ending for engines, try opening my thread "An easy position, for humans". Then, perform a search on that position.... :)

Welcome to the forum.
Input of a strong grand master is always well received, especially if backed up by concrete, proven examples.

I have analyzed this a bit and i think the heart of the problem is, that stockfish does not properly evaluate pawn endings.
E.g. when using this slightly simplified position
[d]8/pp3ppk/7p/4K3/8/8/PPP3PP/8 b - - 0 1
i get a static eval of +0.45 for white . Everyone should see on the spot, that white is completely winning here. IMHO, at least the dominating king position should be considered somehow.

The excellent "Stockfish-Evaluation-Guide" (https://hxim.github.io/Stockfish-Evaluation-Guide/) allows programmers, to study the static evaluation of stockfish in detail. I was somewhat surprised to learn, that the evaluation of pawn endings presently looks very lowly, not to say completely absent. Everything carries over from some other concepts with machine tuned parameters.

I believe that stockfish in pawn endings currently relies mostly on its extremely deep and intelligent search. The position you reported is one example, where that fails.

I got so interested by the position, and I missed to read the name...

I feel honored! :)

I do not see a problem in pawn endgame.
+0.45 for white means that white is clearly better and you cannot expect program to see that white is winning without deep search.

Evaluation that is going to say that white is winning here may also say that white is winning in some drawn position when the white king is better.

Stockfish practically avoid Qxf3 at tournament time control and it is good enough:

If I slightly change the position and put the pawn at a7 instead of a6 it seems that Kxd3 does not win

After Kxd3

Re: Queen and pawn endgame

Post by Maxwell86 »

With the pawn on a7, isn't the position still winning for white? After 38....g6 39.b4! seems to win for white?

I would agree with Oliver Roese that Stockfish doesn't evaluate pawn endings very well.

or maybe stockfish simply cannot find the win in a pawn endgame.
Did not check if b4 is the only winning move
