Game 12: Komodo holds in the King's gambit, too

Post by Jeroen »

In the return game Komodo surprisingly goes for an exchange sacrifice, getting only one pawn in return. But white's active piece play turns out to be enough to hold the game. A very interesting draw.

Game 13: white king on e2, but still drawn

Post by Jeroen »

Another wild King's gambit line, where white puts its king on e2 early on. I am a bit surprised by 7... Bxf3+, where 7... Nc6! seems more challenging. Komodo tries an interesting piece sac (15... Ndxe5!), which leads to a very interesting game. Stockfish defends in an active way and the ending is eventually drawn. Nice stuff!

Game 14: Komodo 's 10.Bd2?! leads to SF win: 3-1 now

Post by Jeroen »

For some reason Komodo chooses 10.Bd2?! to quickly evacuate the king. Instead, 10.Qe1 Qh5 11.e5 would be better. Now Stockfish quickly grabs the initiative and white is never able to equalize. With some precise ending play Stockfish nets the win.

Game 15: Komodo draws the Frankenstein-Dracula with black

Post by Jeroen »

The Frankenstein-Dracula gambit is one of my favourites. It just looks lost for black, but it really isn't that simple. 8... Qf6! is an improvement over the main line, which goes 8... Qe7. Komodo is an exchange down, but with active counterplay black manages to draw the game.

Game 16: antoher draw in the Frankenstein-Dracula gambit

Post by Jeroen »

In the return game Komodo plays 11.Nxb6, which in my opinion is a waste of time. White should let black invest the time to capture the knight by Bc8-b7xa8. We see some fantastic complications, especially the position after 24... g3! is worth a diagram. Stockfish wins back the invested rook, after which the resulting rook ending is level. Great game.

Game 17: GUI prematurely aborts the game as a draw

Post by Jeroen »

Crazy Sicilian Wing gambit, with a rook sacrifice by white. Komodo hurries to give back material (the best option in this line). With both engines indicating a 0.00 score for some moves the GUI decides to call the game a draw. A pity, I wish the GUI didn't do that, as the ending could still be very interesting.

Game 18: Stockfish consolidates and goes 4-1 in front

Post by Jeroen »

Again we see a lot of 0.00 scores, but this time the GUI allows the game to continue. Not without reason, as around move 39 black starts to indicate a larger advantage. White's pawns get blockaded and Stockfish converts its growing advantage into a win.

Game 19: interesting game ends in a draw

Post by Jeroen »

In this French line Stockfish decides to sacrifice an exchange: 15.Rb4! White remains with two strong bishops and a potential passed c-pawn. Komodo rightly gives back the material (29... Qxa1) after which the ending is a draw.

Game 20: surprising move quickly leads to a draw

Post by Jeroen »

In the return game Stockfish uncorks the surprising move 10... Qa5! A few moves later Komodo sees nothing better than repeating moves.

Game 21: Stockfish wins after quiet opening (5-1)

Post by Jeroen »

In this Caro-Kann fantasy gambit, Stockfish wins back its pawn and enjoys a small but enduring advantage. This advantage grows and at move 49.h4! the advantage is decisive.
