Hi Jon-

No it's not a typo...
each engine will have access to it's own local copy (on HDD) of 6-man syzygy TBs.

I've been running 6-man syzygy from HDD without issue since they came out.
We've tested it thoroughly, and run several 'mock' tournaments...it works well. There have been no bottlenecks, slowdowns, or other issues.

I think as long as you a fairly modern system (not some ancient HDD)...there's no problem whatsoever.
An SSD is perhaps optimal, but not a necessity.

No draw adjudication.
No endgame adjudication. (The endgames be played out to mate or a forced draw for the benefit of the viewers.)
I guess "4096 GB hash" is a typo, should be "4096 MB"?

It's a pity that all games will be played from the starting position, that means that a lot of interesting openings (e.g. Sicilian or King's Indian) will never be played. We'll probably see mostly French and Queen's Gambit declined.
I guess this is more of an engine author problem than otherwise.

as you can see the King's Indian and Sicilian were also played.
Interesting, indeed the diversity is larger than I imagined.
But from the 280 games only 2 are King's Indian and only 2 Grünfeld -
compared to 52 French, and 76 Queen's Gambit Declined/Semi-Slav.

Even in this small tournament people may get bored after a couple of dozen games to see yet another French/QGD.
Already a 2-move opening book could create a lot more diversity and still provide a level playing field for all engines.
Thanks Robert (and Jean) for the feedback.

Don't forget, in the preliminary rapid rounds, each engine plays each other engine only twice...
and with 10 different engines, 90 games total...I'm sure we'll see some real variety, plenty of Spanish, etc.

The superfinal is a different story however, with 2 strongest engines playing 20 games (or more if tiebreak is necessary) against each other.
I agree: a 2 move book would be a good idea here I think. I will consider it and mention it to the team.

However, the chess.com team feels strongly about letting the engines make their own moves, without human interference.
It may be a hard sell...
I am supporting the no-book contest with small number of games here;
at least we will witness a change of format and it will be very interesting to see what first moves the top engines choose.

2017, second half, top engines regularly updated, and still all of them preferring the French. :)

The KID almost entirely absent...

don't tell me computer chess still progresses.

Hi all-

Just a reminder that this event starts tonight.
12:00 noon PST (9:00 pm CET)

for more info:
https://www.chess.com/
and
http://talkchess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=65164

This is a 'Live' broadcast event with prize money, live IM commentary, analysis, etc.
The exciting superfinal is Thurs. and utilizes decreasing TCs (15+2 -> 1+2).

We've worked hard on the unique ability to ensure a smooth 'live' presentation of the blitz and lightning games.

I do hope you join the broadcast and enjoy the tournament!

A tournament without opening book is a very boring tournament.
Maybe without "own opening book"?

The less the opening moves, the more Andscacs will play on its own way, the happier will be, and probably will lose less games, I hope :-)
