That's a good point. Apparently, rolling passers have an unusually high weight in Prodeo's static eval :)
You both have seen this well and it has been the case since the mid or late 80's. Consider the below position.

[d] 8/4kpbn/p1p3p1/Pp2p2p/1P2Pn2/N1P1BP2/5P1P/5BK1 w - - 0 1

And the analysis of Mephisto Gideon of 1993, Nxb5 is found almost instantly based on the unstoppable A5 passer that is created. No reductions or other forms of pruning back then that have the potential to undermine the evaluation. The current ProDeo needs 17 plies to find it  while the formula has not changed during the years.

If styling is the real concern have a look (again perhaps) at the MP version of ProDeo 2.2. It's about styling, that it also is a bit stronger is irrelevant. Create a style with the online personality editor and store it as Q3.ENG in the Q3 folder.
It's not only a question of styling. There are so many parameters that it would take a long time to tweak Pro Deo anyway, and great personnalities already exist. (I have to add that I am not certain what some params achieve, despite the excellent explanations in the tweak tool.)

Look at it this way: the old Pro Deo achieved from two to four plies less than the 2.2 version, and despite all of this, it was only about 50 ELO weaker. I compared the evaluation of the 1.86 and 2.2 versions, and I like much more the older. I know that, thanks to a faster search, 2.2 seems "stronger", but nonetheless.

An example: in the main line of the Queen's indian, at move 9, after the exchange Kc3, Qc3, Pro Deo 2.2 (1 mn, 16 pl) will opt for Be4, Pro Deo 1.86 for f5 (1 mn, 14 pl). The line after f5 makes sense, while I don't like the line after Be4. You can compare for yourself.

I feel that there is something I don't understand. Perhaps my understanding of chess is not that good, and the engines are right, while men are wrong.

You understood perfectly well. I have been looking at Rebel Century from 2000 (the UCI edition) for a couple of hours, slow as a snail in depth, like it a lot better.

Is it likely or unlikely Miguel A. Ballicora will modify genrator so 6-men Gaviota tablebases can be generated?

That's a good point, so how do I turn the book off to force it to play on even terms with the others?

I try to avoid "book wins" as much as possible in my testing, so books I use are rather shallow and based on GM games (one is a book I made from all Linares tournament games since 1989, for example).

By the way, I like Rebel Century (2000) a lot as well!

Brendan,

Since Pro Deo is installed as a UCI engine, in the wb2uci.eng,

"You can turn off ProDeo's opening book by removing the ";" character
from the parameter: ; InitString = BookOff/n"

It's in the Arena\Engines\ProDeo folder.

Thanks, it worked.

And by the way, last night I created and began to test a positional Rodent personality and the resulting style resembles true strategic planning.

It uses Pawel's "flank.bin" opening book which is shallow, but gives mostly positional lines for both colors.

Have a look (yes, I know BigLion is relatively weak, but I find this a good way to let a brand new personalities style shine during initial testing)

Good Knight vs Bad Bishop.

Quite remarkable in that last game is the move 21.Rg4!?, already "planning" the Rd3/Nd2/Rdg3 maneuver.

This personality did quite well against Prodeo 2.5 (with book turned off and using a shallower "Linares" book), scoring the following results.

vs Boring: 6-0

vs Gambit: 5-1

vs Dull: 5-1

vs Defensive: 5.5-.5

vs Mad: 5.5-.5

So it seems like I've found a new positional engine/personality and another attacking maestro in one day!

BTW...This new positional personality (Maybe I'll call it Magnus?) lost miniatures to my Rodent II Remy (19 moves as white!!) and Rodent II Topalov, so might be (I hope) vulnerable to attacking play.

That'd make it even more realistic as a positional opponent.

Dear Brendan,

I am testing right now Rodent at fixed depth against other engines. I know it's not very scientific, but since I usually watch the games, it gives me an idea of the qualities of the engine. So far, I am very satisfied with Rodent, and I have the impression that his eval is better than I first thought. I noticed, though, that like most modern engine, his endgame play was based upon search rather than knowledge, and remains quite weak. It will be difficult to obtain a "Rubinstein" personnality with an engine that draws a rook ending with two passed pawns, but I'll try anyway. I also have to explore all the possible tweaks.

And just a little digression: I was very disappointed by Wasp's play in the endgame. In a match at depth 12 against SF8, time and time again it had better or winning positions in the middlegame, just to draw or even lose in the end. Its endgame play is abysmal, and I just hope that John Stanback isn't trying to make it's engine faster, but rather to improve its endgame knowledge. And here, it almost irrelevant if SF8 search at depth 12 is somehow deeper than Wasp's at the same depth: SF is an engine that easily exchanges R in an ending R + 3k against R + 2K, just to lose after that -- a modern beancounter.

I ask myself often if coding some heuristics in the endgame is so difficult.

Could you post some specific poorly played endgame positions.

I'd be really interested to look - especially at the position with two passed pawns which Rodent failed to win.
