Next Komodo match on chess.com

Post by lkaufman »

Our next GM match on chess.com will be with GM Alex Lenderman on Nov. 8 and 9. We played a match with him two years ago at a mixture of f7 odds and rook for knight odds and won decisively (5 to 1). This time the handicaps will be larger; three games at odds of two connected non-edge Black pawns (b7 plus c7, c7 plus d7, d7 plus e7), and one game at queen for bishop and knight odds (with which FM Larry Gilden got a draw recently). We have never even tried to give any GM two BLACK pawns handicap, we've always taken White when giving two pawns vs GMs. We did beat IM Danny Rensch with this handicap (b7 plus c7) recently, but Alex is about a class stronger. As usual the time limit will be 45 minutes plus 15 seconds increment. I believe Danny (or someone else) will be commenting, so Alex can devote full attention to the games. I expect Alex will do some preparation for the match, as he was well prepared for the f7 handicap games.

Komodo has never lost a match on chess.com, and in fact has only lost one single game (at the rather extreme handicap of f7 and three moves) out of several dozen games, with about half ending in draws. But we never gave such large handicaps to a GM before (except for two or three games), and Alex is a young and rather strong GM (he won the World Open a couple years ago). So I won't be surprised if we lose this one. I think chess.com would like to see the human win a match.

I made a mistake in quoting one of the handicaps for the match (sorry, memory failure). Instead of the b7,c7 handicap game, there will be an f2,g2 handicap game. So for that game Komodo gets White but takes off the worst pawns (for Komodo) instead of two relatively "mild" pawns as Black. Probably not much net difference in the handicap size, so no need to redo the poll I would say. The f2,g2 game adds spice to the match though.

Mark mentioned latest Komodo use dynamic contempt.

How do dynamic contempt account for large contempt values used in human odds matches?

We manually set Contempt to larger values for the odds matches (especially big material differences). The dynamic contempt in Komodo is a smaller change to the Contempt setting that Komodo judges internally.

Here is the first game. Lenderman was doing well for a while but started to make some dubious moves around move 30 and went under pretty quickly.

Komodo obtained compensation for the pawns pretty early. Lenderman lost one and returned the second one to reach a drawn endgame.

Komodo won back both handicap pawns and even won a third pawn, but the rook endgame was drawn.

This was a very nice win by Komodo, despite the large (queen for bishop and knight) handicap. Final score 3 to 1 for Komodo.
