Wired connection is preferred for cloud matches

Post by Nordlandia »

Fritz 15/16 users with playchess subscription recommendation for cloud matches to benefit from ponder.

Ethernet offers a more reliable connection than Wi-Fi. It’s just that simple.

If reducing latency as much as possible is your concern—for example, if you’re playing online games and need reaction time to be as quick as possible—you’re probably better off with a wired Ethernet connection.

* Dropped signals: Occasionally, Wi-Fi will lose the signal and have to reacquire it. This may not be a big deal for daily browsing or even streaming video (which gets buffered on the local device), because the re-acquisition happens quickly. But if you play online games, it can get pretty irritating.

* Higher latency: Increased interference can mean higher latency, which can be a problem for all the reasons we outlined in the previous section.

* Lowered speeds: More interference also means lower signal quality, which results in lower connection speeds.

In the end, Ethernet offers the advantages of better speed, lower latency, and more reliable connections. Wi-Fi offers the advantage of convenience and being good enough for most uses. So, you’ll just have to see if any of your devices fit into the categories where Ethernet will make a difference, and then decide whether it will make a big enough difference to run some cable.

Just discovered this today. This probably solves disconnection issues midgame.

I have wireless connection to the main machine I use for computer internet play and it has very seldom had a lag issue or lost on time, or disconnected. It has played tens of thousands of games. I use Ubiquti hardware for wifi (https://www.ubnt.com/).

Wired connection is imaginable better for two computer matches conducted from fritz cloud service. The reason is that wifi connection occasionally drops midgame that results in disconnection, game has to be restarted. This shouldn't happend with wired connection.

Nothing wrong using wifi on single machine matches.

I have a wired Ethernet connection in every room in my house because WiFi is IMHO not very reliable. Maybe it is because I live in a very crowded area, when I look at my mobile telephone I usually see around 30 WiFi signals in the neighborhood and I can imagine that this produces a lot of noise and disturbance.

Atm. I only use WiFi for laptops and mobile telephones, in the past I used Ubiquiti (EdgeRouter POE with AP-AC-Pro), some time ago I switched to Mikrotik (CCR1009 with wAP ac) which performs essentially the same and doesn't need Java to configure the network like Ubiquiti does.
