Re: PST-only Evaluation for MinimalChess 0.4

I'm finally seeing progress with my tuning attempts. The new PSTs are initialized with material values only (all the tables are filled with 100, 300, 300, 500, 900 etc) and fully tuned they look totally different than PeSTOs. I've made a quick 2000 games test against a previous version with PeSTO ta...

Re: PST-only Evaluation for MinimalChess 0.4

I tried to replace my texel-tuned HCE with PeSTO and immediately lost ~200 elo, which means (considering my engine is slightly below PeSTO in CCRL) that PeSTO's search is at least 200 elo better than mine. I don't know what HCE means. Hand-Crafted-Evaluation? Highly-Complex-Evaluation? I sup...

Re: PST-only Evaluation for MinimalChess 0.4

What is the ccrl rating of the strongest engine that uses PeSTO? RomiChess is a "minimal" chess engine. Well, afaik that would be the original PeSTO which plays at 3100 ELO! So the question becomes what is to be considered minimal and what is to be considered incomplete. I don't think an engine pla...

Re: Chess is an isle of sanity in an absurd world...

Most popular forms of escapism have that property, that they are inherently based on very simple rules. The black and white of chess finds it's match in the good vs evil of superhero fantasies which basically all blockbuster movies and crime-novels are a variant of. I think we humans constantly try ...

PST-only Evaluation for MinimalChess 0.4

Right after releasing version 0.3 of MinimalChess, which used non-tuned, non-tapered PSTs for it's evaluation I tried the approach of PeSTO , faithfully implementing the PST values shared by Ronald Friederich in this forum. My engine gained ~200 ELO from changing the evaluation in that way! The new ...

Re: The mailbox trials

I really enjoy reading this thread even though I understand only half of it. A much more intimate, bare-metal approach than what I use (like creating actual List<Move> instances and calling their generic Sort() methods and putting the garbage collector to work) so of course it's much faster than my ...

Re: Progress on Rustic

This means that, if this new list is also calibrated at Alpha 1 = 1677 just like the previous one, but the other engines in the second gauntlet being stronger, Rustic Alpha 2 should therefore turn out weaker. You used Alpha 1's score as the single anchor? That might already be the problem then. If ...

Re: Progress on Rustic

Sven, can you elaborate on this? My initial reaction is I don’t agree with you. A rating is meaningful only in relation to the ratings of other engines. It has no intrinsic significance. If that relationship is not well established due to lack of play against a variety of opponents, or lack of play...
