What a difference a few days has made. Gull is fading fast.

Re: What are the laptop speeds? (in order of preference)

Well it all depends what your needs are. If you want to use something that you can travel with then a laptop is definitely a big plus. But if you plan to keep it at home and want a chess analysis tool and high performance, then a desktop system will be better. If you try to get a high performance l...

Re: how strong of and engine do I really need?

Hello,
I think anyone under 2200 would have trouble discerning where the analysis of a 3200 engine was better than that of a 3100 engine.

Re: what is the speed difference between humans and computer

Hello
Would a human using pen, paper and books have enough time to calculate exactly as a chess program does in a 40/120 game?
Aren't computers already calculating a million times faster (maybe not on single core) than humans in NPS even when humans are allowed to play their own way?

I think the second entity will have no difficulties to win a match. The middlegame and the endgame will be the key to that. And I suppose that even the o...

Re: Too Much Money for an Old Computer...!!

This computer does not appear to come with the original box or any manuals. It does not appear to come with the original (or any) pieces either, so I think it is overpriced.

Re: chess knowledge vs. search depth

the new dumbed down version reached depths of 5 and 6 extra plies. So, by your argument the dumb faster version should perform much better. Instead of gaining 20 out of 40 or better, it score only 1 draw and 39 losses. Clearly, the positional knowledge was useful. Hello, I agree that 5 or 6 plies wo...
