There seems to be as bug on the webpage at the moment. The applet to the left where you can step through the current game does not correspond to the game being played. * click on "end" and you'll get an irrelevant position, with the text Position after 37. ... Intel® AVX (Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions) is a 256 bit instruction set extension to SSE and is designed for applications that are floating point intensive.
So, for Chess... not likely that it will help, but I'm sure that there are others that are more qualified to answer...

Considering the beatdown that Stockfish 1.8 is having, I suspect that something is wrong with your configuration. Its possible that at least one of the authors used to be on the Rybka programming team -- the engine by itself is legal but the author might have signed some agreement preventing him from using the same ideas in another program independently.
