It's because Lc0 doesn't consider the most valueable thing in life. Time. In chess time equals to move number. Lc0 tries to take pieces or sacrificing for nothing instead of quick mate.

I don't have Thothfish and I cannot get it because my provider rejects the address where it is stored. I would be interested mainly in the source code so that I can see what has changed.
