Re: armageddon in norway chess

Yes, chess18 is a better option than chess960. I admit I'm also intrigued by Bronstein's so-called pre-chess, a form of shuffle chess where the players get to pick their starting setup by sequentially placing pieces on the back rank.

Re: Where are the funs of Leela?

As someone else suggested, the 'Dawn of a New Era' would be a better and somewhat less sensational way to express the same thought.

Re: armageddon in norway chess

IMO, a scoring system that disincentivizes draws and rewards wins more, especially with Black, should be better than messing with the fabric of the game (by introducing weird variants). Such an alternate scoring system was discussed here a while ago - HGM made an interesting suggestion, but I don't...

Re: Playing the endgame like a boss !!

Why would this be non-zero? Similar things have been discussed about AlphaGo. We won't know either way until we know exactly what it is doing. But if a non-zero feature was "discussed about AlphaGo", that wouldn't make that feature "zero"; it would make AlphaGo non-zero. (Lc is already non-zero bec...

Re: Komodo MCTS

Hi Mark! Any plans to implement position- learning to komodo (MCTS)? Works fine for me in StockLearn, which derived from an idea of Kelly Kinyama, as far as I know, has something to do with kind of MCTS too. Marco Zerbinati (SugaR_MCTS) and Andrea Manzo (ShashChess and StockLearn) gave GPL- Code of...

Re: Komodo 13.01 MCTS - chess960 results and site updated

Yes FRC is the prime candidate. The 50 positions was from the Rybka forum more than 10 years ago: "Stefan Pohl has created a set of 50 shuffle chess positions, which can be used as an opening database for testing. There are NO castlings possible, and the set does NOT contain any Chess960 positions....

Re: Bluefish vs Leela in TCEC , who will win? BF =170 Threads, Lc0 =2x GPU

Are you serious ???? Aesthetic ???? Playing on for a 100 moves when a mate in 12 is there is not aesthetics! An engine is an analysis tool that is supposed to help us analyze a chess position so that we can train and learn from it. This really makes Lc0 useless to analyze as a stand alone engine an...

Re: New Release of Francesca - 0.22

It looks like I was wrong about the USCF rules. That's how I remembered them. Anyway, 'common sense' can be somewhat subjective and opinion-driven and may actually vary based on the entities competing. As a chess player I feel it's wrong to adjudicate certain endgames that are virtually unwin...

Re: New Release of Francesca - 0.22

Sorry, Tom, after I made the previous post I ran into the following passage in CECP protocol specs (towards the end of Section 9): Note that (in accordance with FIDE rules) only KK, KNK, KBK and KBKB with all bishops on the same color can be claimed as draws on the basis of insufficient mating mate...
