Re: MCTS with minmax backup operator?

The policy network is a static rule (unlike an actual shallow depth search). If it is mostly good, then it won't give enough visits for trap moves that look bad initially but turn out to be good on exhaustive search. If it is bad, there is no hope. So the question is how likely are traps in actual ...

Re: GPU ANN, how to deal with host-device latencies?

Double buffering: transfer the next batch to the device while the previous batch is being computed. The biggest problem is not host-devices latencies, but the inefficiency of small batches. With CUDNN, it is impossible to get good performance with batch_size=1. Especially on big GPUs with tensor cor...

Re: MCTS with minmax backup operator?

I see. Using a policy would probably help a lot. The shogi tournament was this week, and finished today. I was late in my preparation, and started to train my network on Monday. I was pleasantly surprised by how fast it made progress. The tournament started on Thursday. I could not qualify past the ...

Re: MCTS with minmax backup operator?

The result for me clearly demonstrates that any kind of averaging deterioriates elo, except for the case of "avg" and "avg-old" (look below for definitions). 1. scorpio-mcts-min 425 35 35 687 84.9% -69 14.8% 2. scorpio-mcts-mix 321 32 32 687 77.7% -52 22.6% 3. scorpio-mcts-ab 284 31 31 687 73.7% -4...

Re: World Computer Chess Championship

Hi David, Thanks for participating in this discussion. I'll try to express my feelings about why I don't want to participate any more. I don't think the opacity of the ICGA is the main problem. The Japanese associations that organize the tournaments I participate in are opaque to me, too. But I real...

Re: World Computer Chess Championship

Also, for reference, I'd like to point to a similar discussion that took place 9 years ago: https://www.game-ai-forum.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=66 I was the programmers representative at that time. The 8-core limit decision was made in a completely opaque way. I was not at all involved in the discuss...

Re: World Computer Chess Championship

In Japan, they have very successful IRL tournaments for go and shogi. I'll participate in the World Computer Shogi Championship this year. Below is the list of the number of entrants in the past years: ================================= WCSC (year) #applicants #entrants ======================...

Re: To TPU or not to TPU...

I have a bit of experience with these algorithms and hardware. It's a really exciting technology to learn, and I encourage all the chess programmers to try it now. You might not beat AlphaZero rapidly, but it is really refreshing to experience radically new algorithms. And AlphaZero still leaves a l...

Re: Gigatron emulation

Thanks Martin!

I wonder if the flickering would be visible if, instead of displaying 3 lines out of 4, each line is displayed 3 frames out of 4. This could be done in an interlaced way. Or simply skip one full frame out of 4.
