Re: An idea for a different type of tournament

I ran Stockfish dev on the position with only king and pawns for black, several days ago when this was discussed in TCEC chat. Stockfish displayed a mate score after I let it search for some time. EDIT : info depth 33 seldepth 42 multipv 1 score mate 39 nodes 944199624 nps 4600690 hashfull 989 tbhi...

Database with all chess games results question

There are many games that people use for rating when part of them are for fide rating part of them for national rating maybe with slightly different rules(for example uscf rating) and part of them for online chess rating in the internet and part of them for engine-engine rating. I wonder if it is po...

Re: Funny fortress position

What about the following evaluation to detect fortess positions? Let stockfish to play against itself at depth d for some fixed d. The position should get close to a draw evaluation if the result of the game is a draw. Doesn't work in practice, you can get 100% draws just because the engine fails t...

Re: Funny fortress position

Well, when someone creates a perfect eval, I'll be happy to implement that and do away with search entirely. I mean hey, it is just 32m TBs... easy right? Just asking for better static evals of near-tablebase positions :D. Yes, this is very hard, and not particularly interesting. This is currently ...

Re: 1.g4 opening is losing?

Yeah, the engine doesn't report mate unless it has exhausted the opponent defenses, and doesn't report that a mate is at least in N unless it has exhausted them and can at least guarantee a mate in N would happen. Is that really how "all" engines are programmed? It's how they're supposed to be prog...

An idea for a different type of tournament

Let chess engines start from the following position and play 2 games with white and black. The winner is the side that mate faster. If both side need the same number of moves to mate then it is a draw. rnb1kbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR w KQkq - 0 1 I do not know if stockfish is going not t...

Re: 1.g4 opening is losing?

Here's a 20men position where black wins by force: 3r2k1/1Br2ppp/1p6/p5P1/2bNP3/n1P1BP2/7P/R5K1 b - - If you don't know how do I know no software or hardware would help you :D I doubt you know. I have no doubt you think you know. :D There won't be any proof tree because SF doesn't produce those and...

Re: Could we use partial scoring for draws to improve evaluation of engine vs engine matches and tournaments?

One should never award a result on the basis of the evaluation. That would just encourage engines to lie about their evaluation. I agree I can add that I am also against giving more points to the engine that got better position in the endgame based on evaluation of a third engine because it means g...

Re: mmt Vs. Ovyron (G4 D5 BG2)

57/60+ 1:28:39 19,556,306k 3,676k +4.00 1. ... Rxd4 Is this on your old machine, or did you get a new one finally? If 1:28:39 means 1 1/2 hrs, and if it's your old machine, that's not too long to wait (though a whole game of SF v. SF at that pace would be quite long). Yes It is on my old machine. I...

Re: mmt Vs. Ovyron (G4 D5 BG2)

At the least, it'd be good to see SF self-play results at several different TCs to see if there might be any difference in the results. Prediction: The higher the depth, the higher the black wins. This is not about time controls or hardware, but about the depth Stockfish reaches (you can emulate fa...
