Re: YOUR Use of Engines for OTB Play

I planned to answer to your question, since I use only engines as a way to prepare for OTB play, but I couldn't find the thread any more. 1. There's a part of the preparation where you don't use engines: solving problems, reading games without a table, blindfold games help you to improve tactically....

Re: Best Style/Strength Ratio?

I tried to find infos about myself on the net. Unfortunately, I didn't find any game from my best days in the nineties (Serbia didn't pay fees to FIDE back then), and, also unfortunately, I found games I played after a pause of seven, eight years, and results in week-end tournaments, where I never f...

Re: In response to Uri's thread about positional understandi

Dear Jouni, It is indeed a positional test set, imho. But testing automatically, with short times control can distort a bit the results. A human look is also important here. I tested Wasp 2.6 and Komodo 9 in the first 20 positions, and I noticed that Komodo was better -- or Wasp worse -- in dynamic ...

Re: In response to Uri's thread about positional understandi

I downloaded the database. Thanks.

How much do you think that depth influence the evaluation in the endgame testing (you gave the average depth for the openings)?

Re: In response to Uri's thread about positional understandi

Once again, thank you, Kai. I'll be following this thread for more, of course. Could you make your database available? I would like to test some engines myself but under different conditions. I usually test engines in QG and similar positions that are in my own repertoire, but I am curious to see wh...

Re: In response to Uri's thread about positional understandi

Thanks, Kai. Very interesting testing like always. Could you write what version of Giraffe you used? Then, there are a few engines I believe play a good positional brand of chess, so if you could test engines like Wasp and iCE, I would be very grateful. Finally, did you test engines understanding of...

Re: Rebel 10

Dear Uly,

I played against Psion on a PC XT at 8 Mhz... Guess it's probably different on a modern PC.

Re: Rebel 10

Dear Ulysses, the first program I used was Psion: it was so weak that I thought that I played close to perfection! :D

Re: Correct of dubious exchange sacrifice

I spend an hour analysing the position. The position is, in general, better for white, but it's very sensitive, and black has a lot of tactical tricks in his sleeve, with the idea a3 and Nb2. The plan is the one I described, with the opening of the lines on the king's side. Black can't really just s...

Re: Correct of dubious exchange sacrifice

White seems clearly better before the exchange sacrifice -- the knight on b7 is basically trapped. Even after the exchange sacrifice, this knight remains very weak, and I don't see how black can prevent the opening of a file and the activation of the two white rooks. White plan could be Re2, R3somew...
