Re: stockfish 10 vs. Mephisto III S Glasgow

It’s much easier to reduce Stockfishs NPS to the level of mephisto III :-) There is a race between Komodo and Stockfish. Or other top chess programs (Houdini). Shredder is Sometimes in this combat too. Others don’t have the time or energy anymore because of family issues. But why these fights ? It w...

Re: stockfish 10 vs. Mephisto III S Glasgow

Todays chess programs have no idea what chess is or how they shall win. They maximise score. They find key moves as if chess is a test position to solve. And if they see a mate score they do so. But they do not plan to mate. Why not. Mate is the target of the game. Stockfish solves chess by going ve...

Re: stockfish 10 vs. Mephisto III S Glasgow

Also, misdefining intelligence as adherence to some restriction pulled out from a hat is, well, not very intelligent. I could probably write na engine playing something resembling 1800 Elo chess in 1000 nodes searches, but its code would be ugly beyond measure. Thousands lines of code detecting tac...

Re: stockfish 10 vs. Mephisto III S Glasgow

The main point was about lc0 vs. Stockfisch. That Mephisto III plays it too with only 3 NPS was only the ice on the cake.

Re: stockfish 10 vs. Mephisto III S Glasgow

To play a move or a game, a chess engine will get some hardware time. The strength and "smartness" of an engine follow from the quality of the moves played. Whether to select these move it uses 1 nodes, 1K nodes, 1M nodes, 1B nodes... is irrelevant, the important part is how good of a result it can...

Re: stockfish 10 vs. Mephisto III S Glasgow

The search tree is wrong if you need so many positions to find the right moves.
So many of the evaluated positions are redundant.

In our time, an average CPU runs Stockfish at 5 Mn/s.
So what's the point to stop Stockfish after 1000 nodes ?
The fact that stockfish needs 5 million NPS to make a move is disastrous enough,

Re: stockfish 10 vs. Mephisto III S Glasgow

There is no sense in making these programs 40 Elo better. They will not play better because they have no clue what they are doing. They are blind. They mainly win because the opponent is at the time 40 Elo blinder. you only do competition. But not chess. You could, if you like these wins and Elo in...

Re: stockfish 10 vs. Mephisto III S Glasgow

"As long as the programs do not plan to win but make moves , that win material or mate, they do not understand chess." What does this even mean? So if an engine goes for the mate, it doesn't understand chess because it didn't plan to win? I hope Mclane realizes that a mate is a win. Todays c...
