Re: Lowest spec PC to run engine matches

I agree. It is very hard to find a "bargain" computer on ebay. If you're shopping for a workstation or server you can find some deals but not desktop PCs. Most listings are new machines and for used ones, finding one of reasonable age/condition and attractive price is difficult.

winboard/ICC issue

Lately I've been observing a problem where my program stops accepting matches on ICC. Following is a bit of winboard debug log (Winboard version is 4.2.7a): 6638422 <first : (debug) got cmd (main): ping 6 6638422 <first : (debug) do_command: ping 6 6638422 <first : pong 6 6638422 <first : (debug) in...

Re: test position from SCCT

Do you get a + score for Black?

Fritz played Rc1 in reply and lost quickly. Rxc7 is a much better try but Black is still ahead after that.

test position from SCCT

This was played in an offline tournament run by Sedat Canbaz, Deep Fritz 10 vs. Zap!Chess Paderborn: [D] 2q1r3/R1b3pk/2N2p1p/1P3b2/8/4p2P/4Q1P1/3R3K b - - Zap!Chess played Bxh3, which is the best move here. Arasan can find this after a *long* time. I think it is not easy, but was within reach for Za...

bm Ng5 (this is superior to Ne5). This one is pretty hard.

Re: couple of test positions

To clarify the installer is not the issue on x64 - it is the engine itself. Probably a simple problem but I need to fire up the debugger on that machine and find it. I have 6 computers so machines are not an issue.

Re: couple of test positions

Yes, I am planning to release version 10.0 this summer. It will have SMP support and 6-man tablebase support, among other things. I am working on the installer (now using NSIS ) and some testing and porting (to x64). It is crashing on Windows x64 at present and also I haven't gotten a PGO build to w...

couple of test positions

This is an interesting tactical position, from Gavrikov-Akesson, Excelsior Cup 2004: [D] r4r1k/p4ppp/bpq5/2b1P2Q/4R3/1B1p4/PP1B1PPP/3R2K1 w - - according to a comment on chesssgames.com, Gavrikov missed the move Bd5 here (which I have verified is signficantly better than the next-best Rg4). This is ...

Re: Charousek-Maroczy, Budapest 1897

Earlier versions (like 8.4) want to play Bxg5. I think it's possible to select Bg4 and still not see all the tactics that make Bg4 better than an immediate Bxg5. So in that respect it's not a good test.
