Re: Authors lend me your ear - Why aren't you entering?

My best engine is about 600 Elo behind the top of the field. In addition, those engines typically play on hardware 10 times faster than mine. As long as that lasts, I will only gong to such an event if it is next doors (like last year). It is not that I am afraid of finising last. Just that it is no...

Re: Nightrider chess

Couldn't you let all protocol-2 engines have print variants="fairy" in stead? That would solve the problem of people trying to play other variants with it just as well. I still was not able to run Dabbaba when I set the Nightrider switch in its .ini file to 1, not even from the console. It hangs usi...

Re: Hashtables size in ChessWar

Any steroids that can improve performance are ok so long as you don't develop anger management problems as well. Olympics here I come.... I think this only pertains to overclocking. I already proposed that for the next Dutch Open in Leiden we should subject the winners to doping tests, making the c...

Re: Nightrider chess

hi, I've got two questions: - do I understand correctly that a nightrider is basically a sliding knight? does it slide in all directions? - how strong is the beast - 6 pawns perhaps? Yes, you understand correctly. The common technical term for a piece that repeats its step an indefinite number of t...

Re: Hashtables size in ChessWar

ChessWar is a league based tournament on equal hardware. Not every engine is capable of larger hash table sizes. This gives an unfair advantage to those that can use higher than 128mb. This is pure nonsense. If a program is not capable of having a hash size larger than 128MB, it is a fault of the p...

Re: Nightrider chess

Hmm, Lime is a strong engine... Perhaps I should convert Joker as well, to provide a bit of balance!

Re: Nightrider chess

I am not sure how you configured WB and the engines to let them play a game of Nightrider Chess: WinBoard_F does not accept /variant=nightrider (yet?), so I suppose you play either as fairy or as normal (unlike what you write in the FaileNR readme). Faile seems to be a protocol 1 engine, so it doesn...

Re: Board Types in '08

All my engines use 0x88-type array boards, but I once designed an alternative format for allowing faster generation of attack maps, and a table driven SEE. Never implemented or tested it, though. The idea was to represent the board as sets of files, ranks , diagonals and anti-diagonals. (So you woul...

Re: Nightrider chess

OK, I am in Belgium now, for Richard's tournament. When I get back I will also configure Fairy-Max for Nightrider Chess, and will try to setup another small life internet tourney with the 3 engines.

Re: improved FRC version of WinBoard_F

It would be nice if you could also test if observing FRC games works correctly. I do not expect any problems there, but I could not really test it for lack of games to observe. But during the event there will be plenty of games going on to observe! (And I myself will be on my way to, or in Belgium f...
