Re: Testers wanted, for Winboard_F

I tried gothic command to play Gothic Chess, but FMax doesn't let me to use the "horse-power" of my Archbishops and Chancellors. As i saw it does not recognize the Knight power of Archbishops and Chancellors for both sides.... Except this, everything else seems to be normal.... Fairy-Max does not r...

Re: It looks like this

What commands do i have to put in the Winboard.INI in order to have this mini-variant? :) /boardWidth=6 /boardHeight=6 /fcp="c:/engines/umax/fmax4_8w.exe" /fd="c:/engines/umax" and then, before you start playing, paste the following FEN into Winboard: rbqkbn/pppppp/6/6/PPPPPP/NBKQBR w Kq - 0 0 To h...

It looks like this

Note that most of the changes that have to be tested are actually in normal 8x8 FIDE Chess, in particular all kind of adjudications and claim verification in engine-engine play, and proper handling of castling rights, e.p. rights and 50-move counter in FENs. So do not be put off by the fact that Win...

Testers wanted, for Winboard_F

I made quite extensive modifications to the Winboard GUI (starting from Allessandro Scotti's Winboard_x release). The new features are described here . But even if you are not interested in any of the new features, your testing would still be much appreciated, to verify that all old features still w...

Re: About Chess Piece Values, Gothic Chess for Max, etc.

I know it is not easy. This is why I reverted to simply determining the piece values empirically, from unequal-material games. And the opening value of the Nightrider definitely is about 60 cP above that of the Rook. I guess what an ab-initio theory of piece values should weight in quite heavily is ...

Re: About Chess Piece Values, Gothic Chess for Max, etc.

a) Wf : the average of all affected squares which could be covered at all by a chess piece (this concerns all ever possible targets of defense or attack) These 'ab -initio' piece-value determinations are extremely tricky, and I stopped trusting them. If someone would have asked me the value of the ...

Re: About Chess Piece Values, Gothic Chess for Max, etc.

That discusses a starting point for deriving piece values for Gothic Chess on the 10x8 board. OK, thanks. It seems I overestimated the Archbishop aby about half a Pawn, compared to Queen. So I gusess I should reduce its value from 18 to 17, in the fmax.ini file. Its end-game value should be higher,...

Re: Fairy-Max 4.8 released

Also note that I really had no idea on the piece value of the Archbishop when I slammed together the fmax.ini piece description file. So it is quite possible that Fairy-Max voluntarily engages in losing trades. As a wild guess I put A=18, on a scale R=12, C=22, Q=23. On a centiPawn scale this would ...

Re: Fairy-Max 4.8 released

The strange thing is that in the first game with 26.Rb1 the engines claimed and declared a draw by repetition. But there was no 3-fold repetition occured. Whose engine's bug is this? It might actually be Fairy-Max', as I sometimes set that to claim a draw on the first repetition for self play. (To ...

Re: Fairy-Max 4.8 released

I should note also that strangely enough FMax when it has to play a forced move, it actually thinks! Why is that? Why it doesn't play immediately....? Yes, I never took the trouble to add special code to suppress that, even in Joker. The time gains are so minimal, that it might not even buy you 1 E...
