Re: Stockfish-1.7 use of multiple CPUs

Upon starting the engine, I immediately noticed the symptoms described by Roy Brunjes. SF somehow starts off utilizing less than 50% of the cores, but gets going after a while (~1 minute). I tried compiling it myself with the default Makefile with similar results. Could this be a problem related to...

Re: fopen & Vista64(32)

You might try using fopen_s() instead: it supposedly provides better security (?) but more importantly, it also returns an error code that should show the difference between a missing file versus a file you don't have read/write permissions to. If that fails, you might also consider using the Win32...

Re: Arena/Wine 64 bit/question

You can install 32-bit wine under 64-bit Linux. (Exactly how do so will depend on which distribution you use.) I can confirm that if you do this the arena201.zip on your download page works properly.

It has the same playing style as my shell script. :P But I guess it could have searched twice as deep without seeing that mate.

The topic makes me wonder how quickly (in theory) a fixed-depth blind searcher can be mated in the opening...

Re: New Year's resolution: a chess engine written in BASH sc

Now the question is how strong can you make a bash chess engine? It should be possible to look ahead at least a few ply - bash on a modern computer is still faster than a C program was in the 80's. ShouldntExist would fare better if the board rep was just replaced by a more sophisticated global str...

Re: New Year's resolution: a chess engine written in BASH sc

I have installed the fixed version.. I'll let it run a couple of days. The previous version was indeed making illegal moves from time to time. I wanted to report this but then you posted 0.2. Thank you! Please let me know if you see the fixed version make an illegal move (or if you've seen illegal ...
