Re: Material tables

This brings up the following question: as you add more pawns, does the knight gain in value relative to the bishop, as your data and my 1999 article suggest, or does the bishop pair lose value, as the reply by Mr. Georgiev suggests? Of course, both may be true (and probably are), but are both import...

Re: Problems with LMR in late endgames

What can be said in general about LMR in endings in general (not pawn endings)? Are any programs known to have different rules for LMR in the endgame in general than in the middlegame? If so do they look at more moves or less moves before reducing? On the one hand, you might want to reduce less ofte...

Re: small problem with Komodo

We've already fixed the problem (for the next release) that makes Komodo not work in certain modes in Aquarium; maybe the fix will solve these other problems as well.

Re: Firebird 1.0 and 1.01: 180 games.

I believe that some of the testing organizations already do something like this; they specify a time control for specific hardware, then run a test on an individual's hardware and have him adjust his time limit accordingly. But for casual conversation, it's not such a critical issue because most of ...

Re: Firebird 1.0 and 1.01: 180 games.

I can check on that private Rybka forum but it sounds like the type of time control doesn't matter much, it comes down to the derivatives being stronger at blitz and near-blitz and rough equality at intermediate speeds. This is consistent with what I've been saying. Presumably Rybka 3 would come out...

Re: Firebird 1.0 and 1.01: 180 games.

Time management was terrible up thru Rybka 2.3.2a. We did spend a few days on it at the end for Rybka 3, but it was pretty much an afterthought, Vas was busy getting R3 ready for release. Maybe it's much better for 40/x games like CCRL and CEGT run than on game/x + increment levels, I don't know. Ha...

Re: Firebird 1.0 and 1.01: 180 games.

Yes, Rybka was "self-tuned", but on the other hand Vas included lots of eval that wasn't stricktly helpful in timed self-play on the theory that it should help against other engines and at long time controls. Robbo removed much or all of this borderline eval.

Re: Firebird 1.0 and 1.01: 180 games.

So you base the claim that Firebird is stronger than Rybka on a lead of 2 points after 72 games (at a fast tc)? The very fact that these are so close whereas head to head testing shows clear wins for the Robbo family supports my claim that Robbo's superiority largely vanishes against unrelated engin...

Re: Firebird 1.0 and 1.01: 180 games.

If Robbo was reverse engineered (rather than based on improperly obtained code) and then brought to its present level that was a major project. The search seems to have been modified somewhat, in every case to make Robbo faster at some cost in search quality. I believe this was done to get favorable...

Re: Firebird 1.0 and 1.01: 180 games.

By itself there is maybe a 1% chance someone would have come up with the same numbers by chance, but I posted some other items, and i could post plenty more if I had enough incentive to do so. It's not my battle though, I've already been paid for my work.
