Re: How many engines are not able to handle a big initiative

I suggest that you take Active Thinker as the weaker engine and see what happens. :)

Re: values for chess figures...

Given the set of all possible chess positions with material imbalance (normalized to avoid black/white mirroring) find a value set that will give 0.5 points as average result for all positions with equal material if played by equally strong players.

Re: WinBoard 4.4.3 released

I looked at the xboard code a little. I'm amazed by the effort to achieve great generality to support multiple variants. GenPseudoLegal() is 450 lines of code, 90% of which is not related to standard chess. If you know that board height is equal to board width and both are equal to 8 and all playabl...

Re: WinBoard 4.4.3 released

There were many ambitious free like in freedom chess GUIs in development, most of them never reached maturity. Knights was very promising but it died in late alpha stage. Eboard is mature but it is limited on features. xboard is rich on features but you need to fight the counter-intuitive GUI to use...

Re: WinBoard 4.4.3 released

I just compiled xboard from git. Last time I tried to use xboard was in 2005. What can I say... I still hate xboard... The program still looks like it is year 1994. :( Selecting operating mode from command line and being unable to switch from playing on ICS to analyzing with engine with menu in 2010...

Re: values for chess figures...

No one really knows the exact values. :) In fact there is no such set of numbers cause it depends on position and play style. In case of average position and average game style the best I can say is that the values of pieces are unlikely to be exact multiples of 0.25 pawns. :) Empirically determinin...

Re: WinBoard 4.4.3 released

Thanks for your hard work.

I'm a bit confused. What is the status of your repository? Is it a fork of win/xboard or the new "official" repository? I tried reading xboard page at gnu.org but it makes me even more confused.

Re: A fantastic game King in the middle of the board SF163-N

Great game!

I analyzed with other engine; other engine thinks black could fight for advantage with 20. ... Kc7 21.Na3 a6
In this line black d pawn becomes very dangerous when queens are traded.

KNNNKN without tablebases

[D] 8/4K1n1/8/8/3NN1k1/8/4N3/8 w - - 65 34

Does your engine see mate in 13 without tablebase here?

I played with it a little:
Spark 0.3a is blind here
Stockfish gives +327.00 quickly but needs a few minutes to find shortest mate in 13
