Re: I care more about cheating in human tournaments

To the chess community: Our chess club has been losing members. Is it economics or dominating computers or both? You can see most of the cheating on chessbase.com. I could care less about cloning but that's my humble opinion. The under 2200 ELO club will be decimated by chess software very soon if ...

Re: How Strong is the best Shogi engine?

What about crazyhouse? It combines the key parts of chess and shogi, but it usually seen as something that should not be played with time controls over 5 minutes per game :(. For this reason it deserves a negative "tradition" score. With tangible boards (flippable pieces?) and long time controls it ...

Endgame position: Is it a draw?

Endgame position:
[D]6k1/1pp3p1/1p1p1n2/4P2p/1P1p4/P2P4/2P3PB/7K b - -

Is it really won for black? What is the right plan? Should black take on e5 or play Nd7 instead? Can I fully trust engines in such endgames?

Re: Test Position

Oops, just realized that while I was testing position with engines other performance sensitive tasks were running in background on my computer.

P.S. Stockfish 211 default needs 2, Houdini 20b 12 sec. on single PV and 12 cores each.
You have too many cores. That's why simple test positions do not impress you.

Test Position

[D] 2r2rk1/1p1b1ppp/1q2p3/pP1pPB2/Pb1P1n2/5N2/1B1N1PPP/R2QK2R b KQ - 6 1

How much time does your favorite engine need to see that exf5 is not the best move?

Easy if you set to MultiPV=2.

Re: Will our grandchildren see over 9000 strength play?

No program B is going to get more than 75% against A
Suppose we have the same (or at least same strength) engine running on two different processors. The second processor is 64 times faster than the first. Do you really believe that A will not lose as white?

Will our grandchildren see over 9000 strength play?

9000 is a popular magic number so I tried to estimate how long it will take to have a computer playing at that strength. 400 ELO difference means higher rated player always beats lower rated, 9000 strength requires 20 such steps. Computing power nearly doubles every two years and double performance ...

Re: Old Shirov position from 1995

I found an interesting position, browsing Talkchess' archives. it was first submitted by Dirk Frickenschmidt in 1997. [Event ""] [Site "Amsterdam Donner"] [Date "1995"] [Round "6"] [White "Shirov,A"] [Black "Piket,J"] [WhiteElo "2695"] [BlackElo "2625"] [ECO "D52"] [Result "1-0"] 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3....
