Re: When to check NNUE box

"The idea is to use NNUE only on quite balanced material positions." This was based on the fact that SF-NNUE searches much more slowly than classic SF on most hardware. But if one has fast hardware, so that SF-NNUE runs fast enough, then why not always use SF-NNUE? How is stockfish defining 'quite ...

Re: this will be the merge of a lifetime : SF 80 Elo+

This makes sense but I don't think this is the optimal way to go about this. Of course in quiet positions 50% less nps is not as critical as in the endgame, but I believe even in the endgame the NN evaluation can have a better evaluation in many positions. At the moment this seems like a band aid fi...

Re: this will be the merge of a lifetime : SF 80 Elo+

Is there anyway to run the NN evaluation on a programmable customized daughter card and get it to run faster or more efficiently? It is funny as everyone had been looking for a way to run Lc0 on GPU while having some sort of safety net to prevent Lc0 tactical weakness ... I guess using an AB engine ...

Re: Repository for Stockfish+NNUE Android Builds

I think it is only a matter of time before SF NNUE becomes the actual SF as it seems it is much stronger. When that happens maybe there will be a switch of engines in the SF application for mobile. I am still not sure how the engines compare at the reduced hardware though, but theoretically it shoul...

Re: New chess rig

It really sucks when you are building a system and it doesn't boot. Some things to check from experience are the following 1. Take mother board out of the box again and make sure no screws are loose under and maybe shorting something and re seat it making sure it goes in properly. Look at any marks ...

How do can you test the speed of the compile to see which compile is fastest on your system? Is there a console command?

Re: What are Stockfish and Komodo estimated rating for these 5 depths ?

Actually on the CB GUI this fixed ply seems to be time dependent. I played one game at Ply 4 where I decided to take my time and play slowly and got totally squashed and it played like an angry Kasparov on steroids. It totally did not play like a computer and gave up material for attack from the fir...

Re: New chess rig

I am also building a Threadripper system. I considered an Epyc CPU instead: not as fast but can be more easily air-cooled and may be a better choice for 24/7 operation. But the Epyc CPUs are quite costly and significantly slower. I did not want to use water cooling. Everything I've read indicates t...

Re: What are Stockfish and Komodo estimated rating for these 5 depths ?

That's exactly why I wrote Fruit and Rybka. It's not about eng-eng matches it's about systematic tuning where one needs sound statistical criteria and possibility to play sufficient number of matches. That was not available before mid 2000's. And that's precisely why first Fruit and than Rybka was ...
