AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX might be the way to go.
It does. Its about $5,000.
What the hell are you talking about 2990WX is $1750. With the board, memory, case and everything it is still well below $3000.
It would cost ~5k or a bit more to have a shop build it for me.

May I recommend that you don't get a dedicated machine for chess and use Google Cloud?
I just spent a few minutes looking at that option and it appears to be too expensive for lengthy dedicated service

Re: If you could buy any single CPU system for chess . . .

Depends on what you want. If you want the highest number of games completed in the shortest time than more cores is better. If you want the fastest analysis on a single engine then fewer cores but higher core frequency is better. Correspondence chess - devote ~95% of the CPU's resources to one prog...

Re: If you could buy any single CPU system for chess . . .

I see that TCEC now uses Dual 2699v4, which strongly suggests that the secret to CCC is "cores, cores, cores" There's no secret. Overall search speed is a function of clock speed multiplied by core count, allowing for search inefficiency as core count increases. The fastest systems will have many c...

Re: If you could buy any single CPU system for chess . . .

For correspondence you'd want one of the higher end CPUs: the 16- or 18-core Intel i9 chips or the Ryzen 2990WX. The Intel i9-7960X is about even with the 2990WX according to Passmark scores. These chips are really amazingly powerful for a desktop processor. Somewhat pricey though. --Jon Passmark s...

Re: If you could buy any single CPU system for chess . . .

Jon,
Thanks for your reply. Do we know for certain that more slower cores are preferable to fewer faster cores, e.g., are two 2.0GHz cores better than one 4.0GHz core, etc.?

If you could buy any single CPU system for chess . . .

All the real CC experts are here at Talkchess, so this should be an easy question. Which single CPU system would you build/buy? I'm just a lowly engineer playing a bit of correspondence chess. :D
