Re: Is this a bug in Crafty 24.0 or...

Well, I wish you good luck finding the problem. I know it can be frustrating at times. Here's a good example. I ordered a 4TB HD and a 256GB SSD. They arrived today. So, I installed them. No real problems other than changing the partition type (it came pre-partitioned for some reason) so I could use...

Re: Is this a bug in Crafty 24.0 or...

I notice several people are making claims about how one program or another speculates. I'm not sure that is helpful. It is not very helpful to use material-only as criterium for 'solving' a position.... I don't recall stating that "material only" evaluations was going to be used. Nor do I recall th...

Re: Is this a bug in Crafty 24.0 or...

The point is that it doesn't take 26 plies to win the material back. So why does the engine fail to find the move until 26 plies are reached? Forrest You stated in another post that "I've been away from computer chess and chess in general for about 17 years." Many search enhancements have been intr...

The game is between Kaos running on a Univac 1110 and Chess 4.0 running on a CDC 6600 move 16. Crafty seems to miss the root move Ne6 which wins material. Seems kind...

Re: Crafty 24.0

I basically do one I/O operation to get all book moves for a position. I carefully group them by a hash signature trick. Used to be pretty significant. With today's SSD devices probably not so much.... Well, first I would note that your right about SSD's. They're much faster than traditional hard d...

Re: Crafty 24.0

Crafty can't add to the book. The book format was designed for speed, leaving no empty space here and there to add new moves, unfortunately. I was afraid you were going to say that. This is a major defect at least as far as learning is concerned. How does the method you use speed up access? How muc...

Re: Crafty 24.0

Crafty can be compiled with MSVC. I use the 2008 Express edition. 64 bit support works. You may have to download a stdint.h and tweak some things a bit. The executables are not as fast as some profiled builds, but still ok. Command line args: /O2 /Ob2 /Oi /Ot /Oy /GT /GL /D "WIN32" /D "_DEBUG" /D "...

Re: Crafty 24.0

I've been away from computer chess and chess in general for about 17 years. At one time (1990-1997) I had a working chess program that I wrote in Fortran. In 93 I changed jobs and my work prevented me from doing much with my chess program. I'm now retired and just recently began messing around with ...
