Re: Google's AlphaGo team has been working on chess

Very cool! I am especially surprised they still relied on a MCTS approach in chess. I don't think anybody can actually reproduce these results at the moment with hardware at home but this certainly marks a significant shift in how computer chess will develop. I am curious what kind of performance th...

Re: need some help assessing the evaluation

Would you happen to have Linux binaries for Mat and Eve? Id love to take a look at the two engines, but my laptop doesn't have windows.

Re: Games of the on-line blitz tourney Nov 2017

This was easily Winter's best tournament rating performance wise, but obviously it is still in a rating bracket where there is a lot of room to grow =) Game 1 was an interesting game where Winter played some sort of Noteboom Slav with white being further in development at the price of the pair of bi...

Re: Tapered Eval between 4 phases

I use a generalization of this in Winter. I assume every position is from some set of k Gaussians. For every position evaluation I estimate the probability that a position is from each of those Gaussians and interpolate the evaluation based on the parameters I estimated for each Gaussian and these p...

Re: Stockfish - Initial position, MultiPV Mode=20, Depth=50

Interesting...if you subtract bonus for side-to-move (Tempo = 20)... 1. Nf3 score drops to -0.03 Isn't this completely expected? Being the side to move is the exact advantage white has in the starting position so assuming the tempo bonus is tuned correctly you would expect an advantage in the start...

Re: Is AlphaGo approach unsuitable to chess?

This is really interesting to me. I find it really interesting that this factor 10 speed handicap seems to result in an Elo delta of 450 points  How did you deal with things like futility and razoring margins? I wonder it is possible to classify positions on whether one evaluation function or...

Re: Linux testing pool

I have been using SjaakII 1.3.1 to test my engine as I (incorrectly) assumed that to be the one tested on CCRL (which seems to be 1.3.0). My engine is slowly improving and I was wondering if you knew exactly how much stronger SjaakII 1.4.1 is?

Thanks again for publishing such a great engine!

Re: Check extension vs LMR

Just wanted to thank you guys for the replies. I ended up implementing SEE with the most basic piece values you learn as a beginner (100, 300, 300, 450, 900, a large number for the king). It was certainly more work then the 3 lines of code it took me to implement futility pruning earlier this week (...

Re: Check extension vs LMR

I have been very hesitant with implementing SEE, especially as how I understand it it probably has to be tuned somehow to work with the evaluation function? The value of piece extremely variable, ie SEE has to deal with active bishops and passive bishops, knights on a8 and knights on d4, is this typ...

Re: Ugly games

Winter plays lots of ugly moves in the opening whenever he plays without a book. For example the position after 8. ... bxc6 in the following game looks pretty bad: [pgn] [Event "Computer Chess Game"] [Site "jonathan-ThinkPad-T470s"] [Date "2017.06.01"] [Round "-"] [White "Chesley the Chess Engine! v...
