Re: Speed more important than accuracy?

I think of it like this: essentially an engine at its core is nothing more then an over-sized evaluation function. A perfect engine would search depth 1 and return either +mateScore, 0, or -mateScore. Obviously this is near impossible if not completely impossible. So how do we deal with this dilemma...

Re: Verified mates that are hard to find

Hi this is perfect for me! Tested the first one and my engine took 22 seconds to find Bxf7+ which SF then confirmed to be mate (and impressively suggested it at depth 0) so it seems to be the perfect difficulty for him. That being said, at much higher depth SF realised Qd1d5 mates even faster... Do ...

Re: Weak engine

Oh, Im still in the "no king safety" phase myself and it is glorious! On top of that my engine is currently tuned so he is not particularly fond of material and loves activity (people who faced him in his debut, HGM's tournament last Saturday, might agree) which makes it particularly entertaining to...

Re: On-line engine blitz tourney January

Just wanted to mention that I think Ive gotten it working. The good news is it was fixed the moment I upgraded xboard. The bad news is that since I somehow didnt manage to compile it I can't tell you much more as to why it works now. Among other news, I am now on Xubuntu 4.10... Don't ask :P Looking...

Re: On-line engine blitz tourney January

Hmm, I guess it depends on what you define as few and more importantly what you define as "weak"? If I manage to get everything working I expect to end up somewhere at the bottom quarter of the table with my engine.

Re: On-line engine blitz tourney January

Thank you for the swift reply! Xboard is "version 4.7.3 + Fairy-Max4.8Q (with Zippy code)" I ran everything again with -debug. This time Stockfish had white so my engine didn't even make a move =( Here is the end of the log file <ICS: Issuing: GuestEWZT (++++) StockfishRB (2261) unrated blit...

Re: On-line engine blitz tourney January

As of currently I am able to log on to the server as a guest (yay!) including with my engine, as well as start a game against StockfishRB without issues. However, after my engine has successfully made its first move and SF replies, xboard instantly crashes with a segfault, presumably due to my engin...

Re: On-line engine blitz tourney January

Just wanted to say that I seem to have the same problem as Alexandru on Linux and using xboard. Do I have to do anything aside from the given command from terminal? Also I wanted to say thank you for hosting this! I'm Looking forward to my engine's first ever competition :D It's gonna be a lot of fu...
