Re: Best chess program for iPad

A pittly that we can't combine the Chess Tiger UI with SF's engine power. SF's UI will continue to evolve and (in my eyes) improve, but you're right that it will never be similar to Chess Tiger's UI, which I personally don't like (although there are many worse UIs out there). Also a pity that Tord ...

Re: cheap selling price of the top programs, Houdini 4

I remember the days of paying $119.99 for M-Chess Pro,Genius,Gideon Pro like 15 years ago. Those are an entirely different category of programs than Komodo or Stockfish. M-Chess and Chess Genius were complete chess programs with state of the art (for their time) user interfaces and plenty of featur...

Re: Stockfish search

Whether it is better for Stockfish to get PV from hash or from a tri-angular array is an interesting discussion, but it does not resolve my astonishment. Even if Stockfish extracts the PV from the hash table, how can it extract a move from a node that failed low? Does Stockfish also store hash move...

Re: Stockfish search

In this case I tend to agree with bob and I don't quite buy the "easier to read and reason about the code" part. In this case this would be a completely modular piece of code with minimal impact on other parts. With a well placed comment it should not confuse anybody, not even amateurs. You underes...

Re: Stockfish search

When you say simpler and shorter, this REALLY is a tiny piece of code... In q-search, one does this at the top, with 3 lines of code, at the bottom with 3 lines of code, and inside search at the bottom where you return an actual best move with score > alpha and score < beta, another 2 lines of code...

Re: Stockfish search

Returning PV from hash is pretty embarassing for top engine pretending to be useful for analysis. Hardly unique for Stockfish, though. I know some (all?) Rybka versions also build PVs from the transposition table, and I'm sure there are others. Most users put way too much emphasis on the PV, and pa...

Re: Stockfish search

I don't see any reason to do otherwise, there is no overhead that is measurable in the triangular array approach, and it is a WONDERFUL debugging tool to actually be able to see the position that produced the score... Actually, we did use a triangular PV array initially, but got rid of it in order ...

Re: Smartphone Stockfish-benchmarks

I do think that 64bit hardware will help tremendously in chess, but is there any engine designed for Android or Apple OS that runs in native 64 bits? Stockfish for iOS does, and I am sure there are many others. I think there would need to be new compiles specifically for 64 bits and not sure if App...

Re: LS-ratinglist (news & comments)

I think the electricity prices vary widely within Europe, too. My electricity bills have never bothered me. I guess electricity is cheaper here than in most of Europe (we have lots of water power and a low population), even though Norway is the most expensive country in Europe in pretty much all oth...

Re: A warning about Stockfish 2.7 for iOS

Thanks for this update and free app. I have a couple of features to request if you don't mind :) . I love feature requests, even though I usually hesitate or outright refuse to implement them. :) I'm very conservative about adding new features, because trying to stuff too many features into a progr...
