Re: The phantom of closure

[D]6k1/p7/1p2p1p1/3pPp1p/2pP3P/2P1P1P1/PP6/6K1 w - - 0 1 Now, on the above position, g3 is still backward-fated, but g6 already is not, and you can not call the king side fully closed. There is a substantial difference. Could you possibly say that g6 in this diagram and g6 in the former one are one...

A warning about Stockfish 2.7 for iOS

Unfortunately, I discovered a little too late that a last-minute change in the recently released Stockfish 2.7 introduced a nasty little bug: Every game you preview in a PGN file will cause the performance to degrade somewhat until you exit and restart the program. If you want to load a game from th...

Re: Big new ideas in chess programming

I am, not surprisingly, about as big a fan of free and open source software as you can find, but I have problems with these examples. Linux vs Windows. Can these even be regarded as competitors any more? It seems to me that they have ended up dominating separate niches. Eclipse vs Visual Studio. Vis...

Re: iOS users: don't update to iOS 6!!! (EDIT: YES)

If the difference is not that big, wouldn't it be better to switch to Polyglot format? (Perhaps not for you personally, but for the World in general, and I know you are an altruistic guy! ) No, I don't think it would be better for the world in general. Having my own format offers so much mor...

Re: 20th anniversary of Mephisto Chess Genius 2

On September 17, 1993 My 19th birthday. :) Mephisto Genius 2 first came out. I still remember that very well. It was a major upgrade compared to Chess Genius 1, which had low-resolution graphics and only supported tiny transposition tables (256 KB, IIRC). Genius 2 had higher-resolution graphics, a ...

Re: iOS users: don't update to iOS 6!!! (EDIT: YES)

Hi Tord ! Nice to see you back :-) Thanks, it's nice to be back, too. :) I hope I'll have some time to return to engine development as well later on (I'm already lurking on the fishcooking list), but for the moment, there is too much work left to do on the iOS app, which I neglected for so long. Yo...

Re: iOS users: don't update to iOS 6!!! (EDIT: YES)

excited to know new version is coming, I'll add to your excitement by telling you that the en passant bug fix will, after all, be included in the new version. :) Not a super exciting update otherwise, though. It's basically just a lot of minor user interface improvements and a few bug fixes. thank ...

Re: iOS users: don't update to iOS 6!!! (EDIT: YES)

oh...... I know why, the option 'show legal moves' is turned off by me. Yes, of course! I feel stupid now. Thanks for explaining it to me. :) Easy bug to fix. I probably won't be able to fix it in time for version 2.7 (which I plan to upload to Apple later tonight), but it will be fixed in the next...

Re: iOS users: don't update to iOS 6!!! (EDIT: YES)

I agree that, bigger opening book may not be an improvement in practice, my intention is to use polygolt.exe to create own special books. But the fact is Stockfish for iOS use a book of its own, so forget it :D No, I won't forget it. :) It's not entirely impossible that I'll release my own book bui...

Re: iOS users: don't update to iOS 6!!! (EDIT: YES)

Hi Jianzhao, Thanks for the suggestions! 1. how about making it possible for users to change the polyglot book, after the device is connected to the computer? just like hiarcs chess app, users can put the newest book file to shared document folder. Actually, Stockfish for iOS does not use Polyglot b...
