Musketeer Chess Variant pieces available at HouseofStaunton

Post by musketeerchess »

Hi all
The pieces of my chess variant are now available on House of Staunton

http://www.houseofstaunton.com/chess-pi ... rc=feature

There are still 4 pieces under development (Fortress, Spider, Dragon and Unicorn)

These new pieces could also be used for a variety of other chess variants (Gothic, Seirawan etc.)

They also could customize your own chess set if you want to get a unique chess set.

Why is your variant not listed on wiki or chessvariants.org and what makes you claim that it is the best - apart from the fact that you thought of it?

Adding new fairy pieces to the setup is not a new idea and seems to make an already complex game even harder to play and visualise. However I do agree that chess has become more of a game of knowledge rather than skill these days and it usually ends in a draw too.

Hi
Musketeer Chess is a new and modern variant.

What makes me think it's the best chess variant is simple:
- Cannon and Leopard are two new pieces, of intermediate strength between Knight and Rook. This adds interesting tactical and strategic themes. This makes the game relying on pure imagination and skills and not like actually in chess where the players who learn 15-30 moves of theory could play a whole game (even sometimes win or loose because of memory problems) in a few minutes.
- This variant respects all the classic chess rules but adds a few subtle ones regarding the way the new pieces are introduced.
- The introduction of the new pieces should not be too early or too late. Because their introduction can disturb the coordination between the classic chess pieces
- Extra pieces are commercial and available
- There are 10 new pieces, among them 6 already available (Cannon Leopard Chancellor Archbishop Elephant and Hawk). Still to come (Dragon Unicorn Fortress and Spider) We are also thinking about a substitute for the pawns. We still did not choose the name nor the rules of this latest piece.
- The new pieces could serve for other chess variants, they also could be used to customize ones own classic chess set. They are based on the Staunton standards, designed by myself and by Maestro Frank A Camaratta.
- I my self used to be a Fide Master (with 2200 FIDE rating when i was younger) unfortunately i lost interest in competition because of some heavy family responsabilities but also because i'm a medical doctor with 2 Ph D, a former head of unit in anesthesiology intensive care and pain management. Those professional occupations never hampered me from being always a great fun of chess (i also played on some correspondance chess forums like gameknot.com which i find the best correspondance chess forum, but i stopped playing the last 4 years because of bigger and greater time consuming professional occupations).

My project Musketeer Chess is a project that took me a few years. The choice of the moves of the pieces was always to make to game as similar as possible to classic chess, to add more thrilling possibilities and to always respect the classical knowledge and principles of chess. But the new pieces add new schemes new tactical and strategical possibilities.

Strong pieces but still not very strong (Leopard and Cannon) to add much instability on an 8x8 board.

FOR ALL THOSE MATTERS I THINK MUSKETEER CHESS IS THE BEST CHESS VARIANT (A PART FROM BEING THE INVENTOR OF THIS VARIANT)

For the moment, Cannon, Leopard, Elephant, Hawk, Archbishop and Chancellor are available.

It is a well-known, and in fact almost universal phenomenon that designers of Chess variants think their variant is the best invention since chocolate.

Only rarely other chess-variant afficionados (or chocolate lovers) agree. Which is why claims about variants by their own inventor are better taken with a hefty grain of salt.

That being said, if you want a truly sensational Chess variant, you should try Elven Chess. (Which only coincidentally happens to be designed by me!) Even if you don't like Chess variants the description of it at the link is worth having a look at, as it contains an "interactive diagram", where you can move the pieces around, and get their legal moves highlighted.

I like your interactive diagram.

I should do the same for Musketeer Chess.

You know, you're sortof posting the same thing over and over again.
I'm fairly certain that everyone here who is interested is well aware of your variant and the pieces (they look nice, by the way, but I've always found the reseller to be rather expensive and I rather dislike plastic pieces). Perhaps if you had something new (say, a sample game, or interesting tactics with the new pieces) or if you'd announce a tournament in, say, six months to give likely participants time to get their engines ready, that'd be interesting.

If you want to generate more general awareness of your variant, you should post about it on different message boards (but make sure you keep it to one or two posts at a time, otherwise you're just spamming the boards).

You are right.

An engine tournament with at least 8 participants will be funded of 250 usd for the winner, 150 usd for the 2nd, 100usd for the third and 50usd for each participant.

This tournament must be held online (the easiest way is to use winboard).

The tournament should be in Blitz format which will allow to make a triple round-robin tournament.

This should be very easy now: in the article at chessvariants.org that describes how to make such diagrams I now added a 'design wizard' (which can be invoked by the buttom at the end of the article). There you just have to complete the input fields (e.g. for board size) in so far you are not satisfied with the proposed defaults, select piece images from a list of available ones, drag those pieces onto the board to set up the position you want displayed... And then it will show you the HTML code that you have to copy-paste to your own submission to show the diagram there.

If you want to use this, please let me know what you think about this wizard (in particular if everything is sufficiently clear).
