Putin-backed prodigy gets under rival’s skin at World Chess Championship

The World Chess Championship — which Page Six previously reported is wrought this year with international political undertones — boiled over at Monday’s match.

After seven encounters in the competition between Russian Sergey Karjakin and heavily favored Norwegian world champ Magnus Carlsen ended in draws, Kremlin-backed Karjakin, 26, beat his opponent, 25, in their eighth face-off at Fulton Market.

Carlsen left the table, stormed past waiting reporters and headed straight to his seat at the post-match press conference. But, we’re told, “so many reporters wanted to talk to Sergey that Magnus had to wait for him to arrive. After a couple of minutes, Magnus threw his hands up, walked out of the press conference and left the building.”

According to an insider, “His manager ran after him, because the press conference is obligatory. He’ll be fined some of his earnings for walking out.” Added the source, “He’s not used to losing.”

Chess insiders say Russia, which hasn’t competed for the world championship since 2008, is heavily invested in Karjakin winning the competition, which is still going on.

Sources say that he has been prepped by Russian grandmasters in hopes of pulling off a “massive p.r. coup” in front of an American audience.

I did not feel as if Karjakin beat Carlsen in game 8, I felt that Carlsen beat himself by over-pressing a wee bit to much. Still those were so very impressive moves he (Karjakin) played at the finish. Congrats to Karjakin for the win!
