Difficult hardware question!

Post by rdan1987 »

What CPU is better for computer chess?
1.Intel Core Duo T2450 (2000 Mhz ,533 FSB, 2Mb L2)
or
2.Intel Core 2 T5500 (1660 Mhz, 667 FSB, 2Mb L2)

I would personally prefer the first one , but I would like to hear an expert's opinion!

Hi,
The second one is faster,it's a newer generation, don't get confused by the CPU clock 8-)

For Rybka, Zap!Chess and Crafty, assuming 64-bit Windows, the Core 2 wins by an enormous margin. I expect it to be 20-40% faster for other engines as well. I know of no direct comparison between the two, but the above is based on the fact that C2D is about 30% faster per clock cycle than Pentium D, which is probably a little faster than Core Duo.

And then there's overclocking. The latter is MUCH better in that regard.

I have to say that I am a bit surprised by your answers...Since when Pentium D is faster than Core Duo??
I have checked the Fritz benchmark page http://www.jens.tauchclub-krems.at/dive ... marks.html
and saw that Core Duo T2400 has 2412kns and Core 2 Duo T5500 has 2315kns....
Although T5500 is from a newer generation it is still a low-end CPU , while T2450 is one of the best from Core Duo!
I forgot to mention that I am not interested in 64-bit engines, just 32 bit!!
