Interesting engine. concerning UI, you may use double buffering to avoid some flickering on the board, and the piece set is a bit small relative to square sizes.

I just made recompilation of Alf, with a bit more optimization/shrinking by ProGuard.

Shrunk the .jar file by 30%. Don't know if it gave any speedup though.
