Marc, Take a look in the results of some engines on my computer in the Eigenmann_Endspiel_Test.

Atlhon 2 cores 3800+, HT=128Mb, without tablebases, Deep Fritz GUI:
Hiarcs 11.1 1 core Result: 54
Shredder 10 1 core Result: 61
Spike 1.2 Turim Result: 50
Rybka 2.3.1 1core Result: 57
Fritz 10 1 core Result: 64
Rybka 1.0 1 core Result: 58
Fritz 9 1 core Result: 62
Chess Tiger 2007.1 Result: 49
Loop 13.6 1 core Result: 49

And now look Strelka, I made the test manualy.

Atlhon 2 cores 3800+, HT=46Mb, without tablebases, Arena GUI:
Strelka 1.0 beta Result:47

Not bad.

Hi Paulo,

For Arasan7.epd, Strelka did not do bad either: 142 out of 226 (positions 187 and 197 are duplicates so the results are out of 226 and not 227). Athlon 1.4Ghz, 64M hash (or 48 in some cases), 20sec per position.

also note that fixed-depth matches are not very useful. Not everyone has the same "ply" concept. Programs that do reductions lose a lot of ground when using fixed (equal) depth when compared to a program that doesn't. The reduction program might be moving at 1 second/move while the non-reduction program might take 1 minute per move at the same depth. Not a good comparison.

I started a 100 game match at 40/3, 32M hash (for Rybka Beta), 12-moves book on my 2400mhz pentium. My prediction is 56-44 for Rybka.

Actually Strelka plays very much like Rybka beta, almost no chess knowledge (especially endgames).
...
My prediction is 50.5 : 49.5 for either side with at least 75% draws ;)

I will suspect that result like that is faked.
I did not test it but even if you play the same program against itself from predefined positions I expect higher result than 50.5:49.5 in most cases and I expect less than 75% draws.

I have my doubts about this engine, and I am not going to test it until everyone thinks its an OK engine. One is the naming, second is the size of the exe, third is no underpromotion, then the guy says he used cryptic coding. Who knows that he didnt just reverse engineer an engine?

Actually Strelka plays very much like Rybka beta, almost no chess knowledge (especially endgames). I'm manually testing Strelka on arasan7.epd at 20sec per moves and it is currently doing 37/50 while Rybka Beta Default (very positional) had 39/50 and Rybka beta-very tactical- had 42/50. So for now it seems a bit weaker tactically.
I disagree.

Rybka beta has a lot of chess knowledge.
You cannot win games without chess knowledge and rybka is winning games.

Uri
Hi Uri,

I think I changed my mind now about Strelka (and/or Rybka beta) chess knowledge.
I judged too early before. Have a look at the following position:

[D]rnb1kb1r/2q2p1p/p2ppp2/5P2/1p1NP3/2N2Q2/PPP3PP/R3KB1R w KQkq - 0 1

Strelka seems to see a lot of compensation for a piece sacrifice while many other engines do not.
I'm not sure but the sacrifice looks good, retreating the knight is very passive (it must be a book line)
but I dont have data on this computer to verify).

Interesting!!

What is correct is the lack of basic endgame knowledge by Strelka, have a look:

Hi all,

The engine runs now under the CB GUI the "trick" is to choose a timecontrol like Xmoves in Y time. :o

Permanent brain doesn't work here and I don't manage to change the hash-size. I believe an .INI-file is needed for that.

Someone who can help me on this one?

Best wishes,

André

Hi Andre´,
the engine is working here under Chessbase with wb2uci adapter and under Arena in wb mode with 47-48 MB hash - no more. I make eng-eng without pb.

Sorry, I also do not know if its possible to change hash. But the engine is strong enough :-). In a short 40/20 match it has around 50% against Fruit 2.2.1 !

1. Blitz Game / minutes
2. Base + increment
3. Fixed time per move

The only way I have managed to get Strelka to play is with fixed depth in plies.
I can't test it in tournaments until the engine supports all the time controls.

Plays well, but not suited for blitz time controls.
