What is Freestyle Chess?
In a normal chess tournament there are very strict rules about what you can do or not do during a game. Certainly enlisting outside help – from a human or a computer – is one of the more serious transgressions. In Freestyle Chess everything is allowed. The players are expected to work in teams or with computers. There are no restrictions. Use Fritz or Deep Shredder, consult openings books or chess Informants, call Anand or Karpov and ask for help, if you know them well enough.
The sixth PAL/CSS Freestyle Tournament is played on the two weekends:
1st–3rd June 2007 (main tournament)
22nd–24th June 2007 (finale)
It consists of a main tournament, in which everyone can participate, and the final phase in which the ten top scorers play a round robin tournament for the title and their share of the US $16,000 prize fund. Full details of the schedule and prize fund are given below.
All games are played on the Internet, in a special room on the Playchess server. Participants need to have an account on the server, which is free for the duration of the tournament. If you are not already a member of this giant Internet community (with over 100,000 active members) you can download the software at Playchess.com and set up an account within minutes.
Prize fund
The total prize fund is US $16,000 and has been provided by the PAL Group in the United Arab Emirates, the company that is behind the Hydra chess project. The prize money is divided as follows:
1st prize: US $8,000
2nd prize: US $4,000
3rd prize: US $2,000
4th to 8th prize: Software and/or books
There are special bonus prizes (e.g. for the most beautiful games) that will be distributed after the tournament. Details will be provided when the number and make-up of the participants is known.
Registration
The entry fee for the PAL/CSS Freestyle Tournament is 10 Euro (= US $13.50). This is paid when you register for the tournament.
The regular time of applications ends on 30th May 2007, 12 p.m. Late entries can pay an increased fee of 30 Euro in Playchess "ducats" (electronic money) on the day of the main tournament.
There is no entry fee for GMs and IMs with bona fide Playchess accounts. These players need to provide proof of their identity before the tournament starts. A title account on Playchess (with a King or Queen symbol) is sufficient, since it has been validated by ChessBase. Otherwise you will be asked to fax a copy of your passport or ID card to the organisers.
To register for the Freestyle Tournament you (respectively the team leader) need to fill out a registry form (the link is given below), giving your name, address and Playchess handle. Some days before the tournament starts you will receive an email with further details.

Schedule of PAL/CSS Freestyle Tournament
All times given in the following schedule are in Central European Summer Time (CEST), which is used in most European countries, e.g. Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Scandinavia, etc. CEST is GMT + two hours. Click on the times given in the schedule below to convert to your local time.
Important note: you will need to log in with your correct handle not later than ten minutes before the start of each round. Anyone who is not present in the chess server room at this time can not be guarantied to participate in this round.
Main Tournament – eight round Swiss
Time controls are 60 minutes for all the moves plus a 15 second increment per move. The event is a classical Swiss. The top ten players will qualify for the finals. In case of a tie the ranking will be based on progressive score.

Participants in the main tournament must be in the playing hall ten minutes before the start of each round.
Final – Round robin tournament ("all play all")
Time controls are 60 minutes for all the moves plus a 15 second increment per move. Each player plays one game against every other player. The final will be played on Friday-Sunday, June 22-24, 2007.
The winner of the finals gets the first prize of US $8,000 and the title of "Sixth PAL/CSS Freestyle Chess Champion". The runner-up gets $4,000, the third place gets $2,000. There will be special software prizes for the places 4-8.

Was ist Freistil-Schach?
In einem normalen Schachturnier gibt es klare Regeln, was während der Partie erlaubt ist und was nicht. Ein besonders gravierender Verstoß liegt vor, wenn Sie Dritte – sei es ein Mensch oder ein Computer – zu Hilfe ziehen. Im Freistil-Schach ist dagegen alles erlaubt. Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass die Spieler in Teams spielen oder Computer benutzen. Es gibt keinerlei Beschränkungen. Verwenden Sie Fritz oder Deep Shredder, konsultieren Sie Schachbücher oder Eröffnungsdatenbanken, oder bitten Sie andere Schachspieler um Hilfe.
Wo und wann?
Das sechste PAL/CSS Freistil-Turnier wird an den beiden folgenden Wochenenden ausgetragen:
01.–03. Juni 2007 (Hauptturnier)
22.–24. Juni 2007 (Finale)
Am ersten Wochenende wird das Hauptturnier gespielt, an dem jeder teilnehmen kann. Im Finale spielen die zehn besten Spieler des Hauptturniers ein Rundenturnier „Jeder gegen jeden“ um den Titel und um einen Preisfonds von insgesamt US $16.000. Alle Einzelheiten zum Zeitplan und zu den Preisen finden Sie weiter unten.
Alle Partien werden im Internet gespielt, in einem besonderen „Raum“ auf dem Internet-Server Schach.de. Die Teilnehmer müssen über ein Konto auf dem Server verfügen, das für die Dauer des Turniers kostenlos ist. Wenn Sie nicht schon Mitglied dieser gigantischen Internet-Gemeinschaft sind, können Sie die Software bei Schach.de herunterladen und ihr Konto in wenigen Minuten einrichten.
Preisfonds
Es werden Preise im Gesamtwert von US $16.000 vergeben, die von der PAL Group aus den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten (der Firma, die hinter dem Hydra chess project steht) zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Das Preisgeld wird wie folgt aufgeteilt:
Erster Platz: US $8000
Zweiter Platz: US $4000
Dritter Platz: US $2000
Vierter bis achter Platz: Sachpreise (z.B. Software oder Bücher)
Darüber hinaus werden weitere Sonderpreise, z.B. für die schönsten Partien, vergeben.
Anmeldung
Das Startgeld für das PAL/CSS Freistil-Turnier beträgt 10 EUR und muss bei der Anmeldung bezahlt werden.
Die reguläre Anmeldefrist endet am Mittwoch, den 30. Mai 2007, um 24 Uhr. Darüber hinaus können Anmeldungen auch noch am Turniertag (1. Juni) akzeptiert werden. In diesem Fall ist ein erhöhtes Startgeld von 30 EUR in Form von 300 Dukaten (elektronisches Geld) zu entrichten.
Das Startgeld entfällt für Großmeister und Internationale Meister mit verifiziertem Playchess-Konto. Ein Konto mit Königs- oder Damensymbol ist dafür ausreichend. Andere Titelträger müssen Ihre Identität ggf. nachweisen, wenn Sie die Befreiung vom Startgeld in Anspruch nehmen möchten.
Geben Sie bei der Anmeldung bitte unbedingt Ihr Pseudonym auf dem Schachserver (das sog. Playchess handle) an.

Alle folgenden Zeiten sind in Mitteleuropäischer Sommerzeit (CEST), die in den meisten europäischen Ländern gilt, z.B. in Deutschland, Frankreich, Spanien, Italien oder Skandinavien.
Wichtiger Hinweis: Sie müssen spätestens 10 Minuten vor Beginn jeder Runde mit Ihrem richtigen Handle eingeloggt und im Turnierraum anwesend sein. Bei späterem Erscheinen kann eine Teilnahme an dieser Runde nicht garantiert werden.

Die Teilnehmer am Hauptturnier müssen spätestens zehn Minuten vor Rundenbeginn im Turniersaal anwesend sein. Die Paarungen für die erste Runde werden unmittelbar vor Beginn der Runde bekannt gegeben.
Die ersten zehn Spieler des Hauptturniers qualifizieren sich für das Finale. Bei Gleichstand entscheidet der Progressive Score über die Platzierung.
Finale – Rundenturnier "Jeder gegen jeden"
Im Finale spielt jeder Spieler gegen jeden anderen eine Partie. Die Bedenkzeit beträgt 60 Minuten für die Partie + 15 Sekunden pro Zug. Gespielt wird am Wochenende 22.-24. Juni 2007. Die Runden starten an allen drei Tagen jeweils um 14, 17 und 20 Uhr.
Der Gewinner des Finales bekommt den ersten Preis in Höhe von US $8.000 und den Titel "6. PAL/CSS Freestyle Chess Champion". Der Zweitplatzierte erhält $4.000, der Dritte $2.000. Für die Plätze 4 bis 8 gibt es Sachpreise.
