I can go on and on and on and on with that type of stuff, of course you will find another engine that shows same behaviour in SOME of those positions, but for sure not in them all.
So now tell me how you can't get suspicious ? I don't know of any engine that shows so many similarities without having something shared.
As I said several times, the author must explain a lot, these similarities do not look very random to me...

None of the positions you posted showed anything suspicious. You kept talking about the depths and the scores being different, well that's not the only thing that were different, the moves suggested were almost entirely different!

well, thanks for your statement, now I finally know what I was so far only guessing: You simply understand nothing about computerchess... You even can not compare different move notation - so better keep out when experts talking, thanks.

Hello Thomas,

Just a word of concern: if we could keep the discussions civil please. I think we basically all want the same and that is a fair review of a new,- and free!-, engine and a beginning author, and it is not helping anybody if we start accusing each other of knowing nothing about this hobby of ours.

Continuing in this fashion will probably mean that Graham as a moderator has to spend his Sunday again in editing all the Strelka threads and I think that would be a shame. Personally I think it is about time to end starting new threads about this, and stop repeating the same arguments without any new views, at least no new views that I can see in this matter.

Emotions are obvious on both "sides" and that only shows that we care about computerchess and basically about the same things.

Thank you very much,

Eelco

Re: Strelka: Justice in Reverse

Post by Thomas Mayer »

Hi Eelco,
Eelco de Groot wrote:Hello Thomas,

Eelco
just to start with: I do not stand on any side - since Dann & Brian have said that it is no clone - it is no clone, period.

well, you miss two facts here: WHEN did I post these positions ? Well, friday evening. So clearly BEFOR they checked the engines. And WHEN did he answer ? On SUNDAY !!!! NOW since everything is clear, he starts to attack those which found strange things. Very brave, very clever...

Well and then his statement is fully wrong. Of course everything is the same except in one position where only the behaviour is equal. So if he doesn't understand that he better keeps silent.

It might be to complicate for Leto, but look at those too positions:

[D]8/3N4/8/8/1pp5/brpp4/qpprp3/1nkbK3 w - - 3 13

[D]8/3N4/8/8/1pp5/brpp3p/qpprp2P/1nkbK3 w - - 0 1

Nr ONE is not solved by either Rybka nor Strelka, so it's obvious that there is some problem with Zugzwang.
Nr TWO is solved by BOTH Rybka & Strelka, and that is really strange, because in fact it is the SAME Zugzwang problem, so far I only know engines which either solve BOTH or none of them. This IS exceptional. It has to do with null move verification and/or when to turn of null move. But of course that seems to be all to complicate for Mr. Atreides.

In fact, Mr. Atreides hadn't looked at ALL on my positions, instead he simply wrote a stupid posting because he was so happy that he could kick now on everybody who was suspicious. (Besides, a lot of programmers were suspicious and a lot of well known experts, but of course Mr. Atreides did know everything better from he beginning) So NOW please tell me how should I react on that, thank you.

That was my last posting on that idiocy. When you want to delete that, do it.

Greets, Thomas

P.S.: By the way, I think it is time to apologize for almost every programmer that get by accident on any clone list. Why ? Well, most sources were never checked, so according to Fernandos logic we should remove them IMMEDIATELY from the hall of shame and instead put them on the hall of fame. I have especially Patriot here in mind. But also La Grande, La Petite, Voyager, Lord King, Ocha, OldBlindDog, Siboney, Deep <9>, Azaad, Bionic, Capachess, Christine_T, Confess, Dick Skinner, Enano, Goofy, Gnd0 (Syed Kamall Basar), HardwareHarveyX55, Hydra, Kerostave, LuiZa, Moga, Monster, Nr5, Peter, Quaestor V (José F. Zenon), Rashess, Rocket, Rucsil, Sally6, Squash, Tec_Kika, Tommy, Tuxedo, Ultima & Wincraft - and of course some countless accused TSCP clones. It was never proven.

Just what engine is Wincraft a clone of?
Dann Corbit (Winboard forum) wrote:I don't know where the 'Wincraft is a crafty clone' rumor started, but it has been perpeturated and is clearly, utterly, absurdly wrong.
If you don't know, you clearly need to apologize to at least one programmer. :P

Perhaps, actually it is Fritz who is real parent of both of them?
Sorry, but whole your analysis seems absolutely unsound to me.

Two things about your reasonning:
a) I did not attack you or anyone else about this. Just In case you are involving mes. I did say in several ways it is better NOT to advance a judgement UNTIL there are real probes about it.
b) to accept that protocole of behaviour, called caution and respect, does not means we must cheer the real clones that ever existed. I recall that several of those clones were discoverered after examination and the fact was duly told, but not neccesarily the cloning was advertised BEFORE the proof were at hand.
c) a third point: seems like you thought your examinations were good enough and then and so you considered right to cry wolf. But now you say Corbit and the other guy judgement is enough. So, then, at last, your proofs were not good enough. Isn't that another reason to keep silence about these issues UNTIL everything has been thouroughly examined?

Hi Fernando,

well, this was definitely not about you... you just said there were no proofs at all. Well, the number of similarities were high enough, in fact I can say that with other engines that were finally called clone there was less material available. I have for example Fafis here in mind.
It was Leto who ATTACKED me in fact. And THAT three days after my posting.

tell me a real clone where it was finally proven. There weren't so many where the source code really was checked. Especially Patriot is now explainable, it's possible that he simply made the same mistakes or mimicri then Fruit. Why don't you fight for him as well ?

you were asking for proofs. Well, I gave you some and added that I could give you thousands more if you pay me that time. Did you want that nobody answers to your posting ? I really do not understand that... Are you talking with yourself not wanting to be interrupted ?
Anyway: Yes, I thought that my and others examinations were good enough to be quite sure that it is a clone. They wasn't, thats a fact. If you look back you will see that I kept quite silent, only answering to questions like you did the last days before it was finally solved. Again, shouldn't I answer to your questions ? Keep silent ? Don't get your logic.

Well, what can we learn of all this: we must rethink our way to find clones, because the old methods don't work. Because it was called ashaming that Yuri was finally forced to give his source away for examination this is no option. But everything else can not prove anything so final conclusion is not to search for clones anymore. As clones then no longer produce such idiotic threads then this one maybe nobody is anymore interested in writing clones. What a wonderful world.

Idiotic or not, I just tried to make a point: not to hurry with this.
Respect what you say about me not bearing but silence, well no. Not the full of what I have posted is aimed to you in anyway.
Examination of probable clones must be done anyway. Perhaps, this time, more cautiously.

Bite first, bark later regards
fernando.
