Glaurung 2 epsilon/4 vs Toga II 1.3x4

Post by revengeska »

I'm on Fedora 7 64 bit Linux and today just compiled both engines on here to play against each other on xboard. This game was quite a fun one to watch. It should give Tord some ideas on how to improve his engine.

I used 256 hash tables for each and no book. Enjoy!

Sorry, the notation had a few errors(I wrote it by hand, as xboard wasn't letting me save), so here's the correct notation(you can copy/paste into a GUI just fine):

[Date "2007.06.09"]
[White "Glaurung 2 epsilon/4 64 bit"]
[Black "Toga 1.3x4 64 bit"]
[Result "0-1"]
[PlyCount "97"]

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Na5 6.Bb5+ c6 7.dxc6 bxc6 8.Qf3 h6 9.Ne4
Nd5 10.Be2 Be7 11.Qg3 O-O 12.d3 Bh4 13.Qxe5 f5 14.Nec3 Re8 15.Qd4 Bf6 16.Qa4 Bd7

Hi,
I have played now 30 games for CEGT 40/20 with

Glaurung 2 epsilon/4 2CPU - Toga1.2.1a = 16 -14 (interim result).

All games tomorrow when CEGT is updated!

Hi.

I have to ask. Why do you not run the latest version of Toga? To me it's clear that Toga II 1.3x4 is much stronger than it's older counterpart, with the tests I've done. I'm a bit uninterested about results of an old version of Toga vs a new engine.

Toga II 1.3x4 has an egbb access bug.

I think that it is not clear that 1.3x4 is stronger

The CEGT 40/20 list has very small difference:

54 Toga II 1.3x4 egbb 2802 25 26 394 42.4 % 2855 45.2 %
56 Toga II 1.2.1a 2799 8 8 4940 53.8 % 2773 35.4 %
60 Toga II 1.3x4 2790 30 30 305 45.1 % 2824 39.7 %

The CEGT 40/4 list has 1.3x4 as only slightly stronger

Hello Uri,

I agree. I see zero evidence that 1.3x4 is the stronger version. I perform most of my tests at ultra-long time controls which gives me high quality games, but too few to generate statistical comparisons.

However, it's my perception that 1.3x4 is less aggressive than it's predecessor. I subjectively prefer 1.2.1's move selection in the middlegame.

All the best,
Steve
