How can this event be called a World Championship when only 4 engines are invited?

Surely it is just an invitational event?

4 participants?
With invitations?
All these seems bizarre....

So it seems Hiarcs does not participate because they haven't invited you. And they invited just 4 engines? Not a very reasonable tournament it seems..... :-(

Also the site says:
"Jonny
Computer-World Champion Reykjavik 2005"

Was Jonny the champion in Reykjavik? I thought Zappa was. :o
After his son's birth they've asked him:
"Is it a boy or girl?"
YES! He replied.....

Hi George,

It is very strange. 4 engines for a major event and not inviting the ratings list leader http://computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/404FRC/ isn't that what happened when Rybka was not invited to the ultimate challenge? At least that was not called a World Championship.

I have today emailed the Press Office at Livingston the main Sponsor - I doubt they are aware of how the tournament is being organised.

Best Wishes,

Harvey

It seems to me that if they couldn't organise a proper "world championship" they could have just cancelled it this year. Or else, don't call it a world championship, because with just 4 invited people it clearly isn't

Hi Ray,

I agree. A world Championship should not be a closed event. Better to cancel than call an invitational with 4 engines the World Championship.

I think Jonny should be there. I don't think that a closed invitational event can be called the World Championship.

Who decides that this can be called a world championship?

If it is renamed the Mainz invitational - that is fine!

This tournament was clearly not announced to be a world championship tournament, but more like a side event, similar to the programmers' blitz event.

So why is it called the World Championship?
