Which handheld is best for chess?

Post by Larry »

I know this has been discussed before on CCC but I took little notice
of it then. Just the other day I could'nt resist a PalmIIIxe for $5 at
a flea market. I put chess genius on it and it plays ok, but quite slow
as you can imagine. And in black & white only.
It has whet my appetite, now I'm looking for something much
faster. I'd appreciate it if some here could give me some guidance on
which handheld will give the best chess program performance, ie,
the best nodes/second. They all seem to have good graphics from
what I can see.
Also, if you could give me an idea which is the best chess program
for one of these things. I think HIARCS is best, not sure.
Looking forward to your opinions
all the best
Larry
PS I'd appreciate a lead on some freeware chess programs for a
handheld as well.

iif CPU is a "ARM" have a very good level.. maybe ~2500 in some engines.

but whit a "simple" palm m130 ( color LCD ) and cheap have near 2200 ELO FIDE... chess tiger 15.2 ... enough for some rapid games...

maybe in future ( I don´t know when...) exits other version of chess tiger... maybe a "smaller" programs with some better algoritms of the version PC chess tiger 2007...

In palm systems hiarcs have a good level, but when CPU is a intel ARM... speed up 200 Mhz... ~ 400-500 Mhz...

remember that palm m130 have a dragon motorolora 68K. runs a 36 Mhz... in overlocking ~54 Mhz...

I like more chess tiger for this "slows" systems... but chess genius runs ok... ( the util pocket chess deluxe have a good service to see *.pgn and select gamesbases files... and database of problems)

prices of all engines are between 15-35 €.

bye.

OF course... I was writed: "I like more chess tiger for this "slows" systems CPU..."

but the title of THEME is:

Which handheld is best for chess?

Exits a lot of handhelps , and a lot of chess programs... for that... If CPU not is ARM. tiger are good, very good ( i like in all cases... of course... but I´m impartial... evaluation. ) ...

I like style of chess tiger for Handhelp... very human...

but pokect chess deluxe 2.1 ? , ( not have a good engine ) but is a good program for see games, or problems, It´s easy change database... etc.

and hiarcs have "selecting" books etc... but not like his style, is very strange... and his support to databe is not as comfortable as pocketchess deluxe...

( I have in past a combination of pocket chess deluxe and chess tiger 15.1, in a palm m130, ... I like more more battery support that speed ups... )

Some programs have some interesting thins and other program not have a good options... ( PALM or pocket PC ? ) I like more PALM but his support to files not is very comfortable.

( when we can se a revision of chess tiger with can read a database... ( not only a game *.pgn and have some improvements about 2007 version...)

I hope early... ;-)

Ok, thanks Christophe. I'll take your word for it and buy it now.
These things are only cheap nowadays, so what the heck!
And thanks to Oliver too for your advice, it's appreciated.
all the best
