Fruit availability - 2 questions

Post by Kaj Soderberg »

I never purchased Fruit, but triggered by some discussion on a couple of current strong engines which i will certainly not mention by name, i want too now. Therefore 2 questions pop up in my mind:

1. Is the Fruit site still really up and so Fruit to be purchased?
2. Is there a new version (maybe MP?) coming up?

Whatever the answers are, i want some legal Fruit added to my collection.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

Best regards,

Kaj

Although these are two very different questions I would say "no" to both.

Here too there are two questions in one sentence.

"Is there a new version coming up ?" I hope I may say 50% chances ...

"maybe MP ?" I would say 99% : no :-(

Is there a new version (maybe MP?) coming up?

When I questioned Joachim Rang (Fruit's main tester and tuner) about this, he emailed to say, "There is steady progress even without Fabien [Letouzey]. As far as I now [sic] Fabien is only busy for the moment and will rejoin in improving Fruit later. He already started the multi-processor-support and will continue this for the next release." Unfortunately, the email dates from February 2006. However, the website shows an update from February of this year: http://www.fruitchess.com/news.htm

From what I read in some of the posts here, Fabien is developing a new engine Chess64 and it will support SMP. I don't know when will it be released, but I think they would never release it until it is near or surpassed the strenght of Rybka.

Yes and Vas was one of the first programmer who asked if the new engine would be released under GPL again....

If there is a future release it will not be through the fruitchess.com web site. Joachim is still in control of sales of Fruit 2.2 and Fruit 2.2.1. If a new Fruit is release it will not be commercial.

What is the reason for the decision not to do it commercial?

Playing strength is clearly enough to make it commercial even if it is not number 1 and if fabien does not like to deal with customers he can still give someone else to do the job.

Uri
Of course they don't have to give a reason.
It's their choice and their business.

On playchess now appears "Fruit 3..Beta", Anyone know if it's fake? .. The user is Nolan Denson. I really hope we gonna see a newer Fruit version someday as well.

Here's a reference game Vs. Rybka.
Hope it's genuine. (Btw it won the next game but It wouldn't copy it for some reason):
