Chess Informant

Post by PauloSoare »

I buyed all encyclopedias A-E in the site of Chess Informant.
Well, up to now I didn´t run it on my computer.
Problems:
1- I don´t know how to download the program named CIR.
2- I don´t know if the sotwares run in Win XP64.

My last email for Chess Informant:

" My friends of suport,

I buyed all encyclopedias A -E in eletronic format.
Unhaply I am not able to install my software because
I don´t know how to download the program Chess Informant
Reader.
My OS is Windows XP 64 bits.
Please, help me, there are around 1 month that I buyed the
software and I am not able to use it"

NO REPLY.

Somebody can inform to me if the programs run in XP64 and
how to download CIR?

The price? ~U$ 175.

Hi Paulo, I don't know the answers but maybe we can find out where it goes wrong, if you go to this page http://www.sahovski.com/other/index.php?other=9 and click on the link to CIRsetup.exe, you actually go to a page where you have to enter an e-mail address, to which they will send you an activation code for downloading the reader. Did you do that already, or was there no e-mail returned to you when you did that?

I think the page says that, instead of the Chess Informant Reader, yould also follow a similar procedure to download Chess Informant Expert Lite, that you could, I think, also use to read the Encyclopedias, but again you have to enter an e-mail addres first on the page that links to that program and then wait for the Chess Informant people to send you a download activation code.

Regards, Eelco

P.S. If the SUBMIT button does not work it says in the FAQ:
Q: Even though I have filled in the registration form and I am on the Internet pressing the SUBMIT button, still nothing is happening!!!
A: The problem is that you are probably connected on the Internet through some local network that doesn't allow submitting the registration form. In that case contact your local network administrator.
but that is probably only a problem if your computer is part of a local network, I don't think that that is the case for your own computer Paulo?

Eelco, I always speak, you are great!
For the first time I obtained to make download the
program CIR, using your link.
Already I have access to the CIR and already I installed opening
encyclopedias.

I am with a problem, appears an error of violation.
I have two computers. One I use for my work,
and the other for the Internet and chess. They are on in net,
perhaps the problem is this.

I one more time thanks to you for your time and patience.

Now I have to go for a next city, called Búzios,
later I go to look at with more attention for the problem.

Eelco, I registered and updated CIR, but I have a problem, look:

"While updating its system files, Chess Informant Reader has found some
corrupted games or lines. Their list is given in the file "update.log"..."

I already sent to Chess Informant the file "update.log".

Hi Paulo,

Yes I see. Difficult to give good advice! Maybe the Chess Informant people know more. Maybe it is possible to undo the update and then let Chess Informant Reader do the update again? Or maybe it is possible to do some reparations yourself, if it is clear which lines would be incorrect. Is the Chess Informant Reader still working Paulo? Or does it keep repeating this error message?

Maybe you could post the update.log here too?
It is possible that somebody would recognize what is going on...

I don't have any of the software involved myself, but maybe it is just a few bad opening lines and the update would just have to be repeated somehow.

Eelco, you give me a good advice! Your time and patience, it´s
very important to me, and don´t forget that you learned to me
the program CIR link.

Well, I uninstall CIR and Encyclopedias A-E, and download
these programs another time.
I installed the programs that I download, but the problem
it´s the same.

I think it´s very difficult somebody understand the log file,
because the error is in code, but.....:

Paulo Soares
Hi Paulo,

I'm afraid I can't make heads or tails out of the update.log, except that it seems to be one type of error, Err 33, and it occurs in several opening lines I think, here all from A 00, A 01, A 02 and A 03. But maybe I got that totally wrong...

If you don't hear anything from the Chess Informant Support people, I have just a few options left to try, I'll make a little list:
  • Paulo, I think you are not the only one who got this same type of messages, when I went to the Sahovski forum at http://www.sahovski.com/forum/index.php
there was someone who also got the same violation errors that you reported, Valer Lilov writes in this thread http://www.sahovski.com/forum/view.php?t=21
that he also got the same message about corrupted games or lines:

When I closed Chess Informant Reader, before to be closed, he tell me that:
"While updating its system files, Chess Informant Reader has found some
corrupted games or lines. Their list is given in the file "update.log", which is located in the folder where Chess Informant Reader was installed.(by default it is the folder "C:\Program Files\Chess Informant\Chess Informant Reader").
What exactly is the problem is not clear, but he was given the advice to send in the update.log and not only uninstall the software but also to register again, so he would get new keys sent by e-mail.

I don't know if you have already tried that Paulo.
  • There could also be a problem running the Chess Informant Software in 64-bit Windows because they are no longer developing Chess Informant Reader it seems, because they find Chess Informant Expert more comfortable to work with. Aljosa Obuljen writes that in this thread http://www.sahovski.com/forum/view.php?t=10 I believe that this Chess Informant Expert program is also downloadable, maybe that one is a little newer than the Chess Informant Reader?
  • Another thing that you could maybe try Paulo if the software still does not work when you install it again, maybe run it in an older compatibilty mode?
This is just my guess, but if you right-click on the link to the program in your Windows Start Menu, you can go to 'Properties' and then choose the tab 'Compatibility' -> 'Compatibility Mode' I thought maybe it is possible to choose here a Windows version that is not yet 64-bit? Maybe it is worth a try?
  • I saw Michael Byrne also posted on the Sahovski forum in april from this year, see http://www.sahovski.com/forum/view.php?t=47, Michael is a longstanding CCC member and he posts here and in the HIARCS forum from time to time, he also had some problems contacting the Chess Informant people, there were also some problems with the e-mail spam filters apparently. It seems that he could contact the Chess Informant people later and got their mail. Maybe he has some tips? Anyway, it seems the forum there still works and Chess Informant Support also responds still to e-mail.
  • There also was a tip for Vista users that maybe works with Windows 64-bit as well, it was posted in this thread: http://www.sahovski.com/forum/view.php?t=49

Eelco, I think I will go to confuse Chess Informant team
because, by the first time, I was able to download Chess Informant
Expert ligth, maybe because I downloaded CIR and registered it.
The problem it´s the same, a windows apeared and said that I
have to register CIE again and that I will receive a new key.

Thanks for your interest in my problem.
