Strongest Fruit - what's the verdict?

Post by Eraserheads »

Can somebody tell me which of the many Fruit versions is proven to be the strongest?

Right now there are many versions out that are very close in play level. A new release that is clearly better than the others is not far off though.

What was the point of releasing many versions that are very close in playing level? Apart from generating still unanswered questions as to which is the strongest, overloading testers' schedules, crowding the ratings lists, and so on.

What was the point of releasing many versions
to get them tested?

I did not release all of the versions. The ones I did release was to give people more options. I don't consider best engine vs. engine play to always mean most fun. Also there are Toga's that are close in play level and I have nothing to do that them. Notice that there are more Toga versions than Fruit versions on the ratings lists. For me it does not matter, if people want a better version it does not hurt me to give it out, otherwise it does no harm to me to let it collect dust. I never forced anyone to use or test Fruit so over crowding the ratings lists is not my problem.

Good Point :D

Yes, Computer chess members always want more versions! only few don't I guess.

By the way how's chess64 work going?

Thanks Igor, this is interesting! I'm playing 2.3.1 at the moment vs
Rybka 2.3.2a in some 720' games and fruit has won 1 and drawn 2!

However the options screen is too tall, does anyone know how to make
the whole thing appear properly? (this is under XP)

Hello Andrew that depends a little on what interface, GUI you are using I think. As far as I know ChessPartner is the only one with a scroll down menu for the UCI options and I have seen no problems there. The new Shredder interface has three columns I was told by Stefan, but now that Shredder 11 is delayed a bit, maybe Stefan could take a look whether that is still enough and whether a scroll down menu would maybe be possible? I hope maybe Stefan Meyer-Kahlen reads here...

By the way I can't quite figure out what is Fruit 05/11/03 HD 1-2 exactly for version? Does it have to do with History Depths?

Regards, Eelco

It's Fruit 05/11/03 with "History Depth 1" set to 2 (default=1)
