It's not how he lived that counts, but how we re-write the book.

wow! A complex man and he did much to further the game of chess in his playing days. Truly a legend.Chess Gator wrote:We are all aware of Bobby's issues, but I still could help feel sad and a sense of loss at Bobby passing away.

I didn't know the song, and admit that in spite of my sense of loss at Fischer's passing way, it was very funny.lewisg wrote:It's not how he lived that counts, but how we re-write the book.

There's a video at CNN where Kasparov is asked about Fischer's latter-life vituperations, but he pointedly said that they won't overshadow the former world champion's accomplishments until his 1972 win. It's normal, and I agree.
A great champion has gone. It's true that we barely had any contact with him, and possibly wouldn't have had anymore, but it is still one more element of an era that is irretrievably past. The only one left, being the timeless Korchnoi.
I think it's safe to say we can expect a significant influx of Fischer books and videos though.

A great, great chess player has passed on. Too bad he suffered from mental issues, and too bad his chess career ended so soon after his match with Spassky.
I think his match with Spassky will be viewed historically as the turning point of the Cold War.

Yes, it's a sad day in chess.
Though many news articles didn't disclose the cause of death, it was kidney failure (not surprising as he had been having kidney related issues for the last years.)
I am sure this legend will be reborn to the younger generation as the movies and books covering his life & death hit the scene.
R.I.P.
