Re: Test Position - Nxg5

Post by Eelco de Groot »

Unfortunately as someone discovered earlier this week Shredder 11 has a bug in reporting Fail Highs to the GUI, so often, maybe always, it only shows a Fail High if you stop analysis or in the case of an EPD test it will give the correct answer, but only when the maximum time for a position has elapsed. The same happens here but I assumed that the default settings can find Nxg5 at twenty ply, but I just don't know exactly when. If you take the time to get to twenty ply as a lower limit then for Shredder Default it is more han 13 minutes but when I stopped the search after about 14', there was not yet a Fail High.

For Shredder 11+ I got a slightly better result this is partly because it chooses 1...Nd7 quickly after 1. Bg3, it is a good move but maybe not the only choice, it does help lower the solution time, at least the time to twenty ply deep because after 1. Bg3 Nd7 the settings see a move repetition and a quick 0.00 score is the result. Because of the bug I do not know exactly when the Fail High for Nxg5 occurred, the time of 31:29 is just the time that I stopped the search:

Hi Tony,

You must be the most patient person around here :D 31 hours search for Rybka?

On my PIV 2.4 Chess Tiger Gambit 2007 couldn't solve it within an hour. However I used the uci function "searchmove" and got the following results:

Code: Select all

Now the same with Glaurung 2.01:

Ng5 does indeed looks like a good move! Deep tactics I must say. Maybe the quads will find it in a reasonable time?

I tried my old Fritz 8 on it (original test position, not explicitly searching fot Nxg5!):

Code: Select all

1.Bg3 exd4 2.cxd4 g4 3.Bh4 Re8 4.Re1 gxf3 5.Qxf3 Nxd4 6.Qxf6 Qxf6 7.Bxf6 Nb3 8.Rad1 Nc5

I suspect Fritz 9 or Fritz 10 will find it even faster but I'm so sure about the newer and stronger Fritz 11 as its tactical abilities seems to have diminish somewhat from what I've seen. Maybe you can take a look at this thread to find good test position solvers: http://www.talkchess.com/forum/viewtopi ... e4d543464e

Shredder 11+ Beta 4 Settings

Post by Eelco de Groot »

About Shredder 11+ Beta4: I just made these settings to test some positions today so it is very possible they play terribly, a first testmatch with Beta 2 settings against Naum 3 was lost, first game Shredder threw away a draw by a bad horizon effect in the endgame, -playing too quickly perhaps?-, but that does not say everything, the default settings also play the erroneous 59. Ng5? or 59.Nd6+? before finding that 59. f5 is better and holds the draw:

Re: Test Position - Nxg5

Post by tmokonen »

Hi Marc.

I was also using a PIV 2.4 for my testing. This position, unbelievably, comes from a 10' blitz game on Playchess between a 1550ish chump playing white (me) and a 1750ish chump playing black (some other guy).

I played Nxg5 in the game, but for all the wrong reasons. I had mistakenly thought that Bg3 was losing a pawn, and I figured if I'm losing material I might as well do some damage to his kingside pawn structure. When I started analyzing it afterwards, I noticed that a lot of programs liked the position after Nxg5 was played, but had a very hard time finding Nxg5 itself, so I figured it made a pretty good test position.

I have to say, I'm very impressed with the tactical abilities of Bright 0.3a.

Hi,
I gave glaurung2.01 a try. On 2 procs of an AMD X2 5200+ computer I got:

Code: Select all

15 +39 319 5001889 Bg3 exd4 cxd4 g4 d5 gxf3

20 +76 13182 285238064 Bg3 Re8 Re1 Bc8 h3 Bd7 Rb1 Re7
20 +90 22817 499143779 Nxg5 hxg5 Bxg5 exd4 f4 dxc3 Qe1
21 +168 40827 903319790 Nxg5 hxg5 Bxg5 exd4 f4 dxc3 Qe1

24 +213 280060 6422166763 Nxg5 Ne7 Nf3 Ng6 Re1 Nxh4 Nxh4
So it took glaurung2.01 228 sec to find Nxg5 and the score is growing.
kind regards
Bernhard
