Is it time to get a faster computer?

Post by terminator »

My computer is so old its takes 2.5 hours just to run spybot. (Don't ask how long it takes to run an AV scan). I gave up running computer tourneys as my PC is hogged up. Should I get a new dual core or something?

Tournaments should run just fine, even on older comps.
spybot taking so long might have to to more with a large amount of files on the computer or other processes running in the background.
Either way it will need a good cleanup.
In due time some crapware might also have settled in.Run hijackthis and post the log on one of the hijackthis forums.
If you don't control on what gets installed on your computer
buying a new one will not help.
Good luck

You don't need a new computer.
A 2.5 hour spyware scan is normal.
A new dual may be too fast.

Matthias.
My engine was quite strong till I added knowledge to it.

Usually a computer will pick-up tons of malware as time goes by. Ask yourself if your computer has always been sluggish or is a new phenomenon. If it is something new then most likely your computer has picked up a lof of malware from either sites you have visited or from software you have installed. Fixing this problem usually is as simple as reformat and reinstall the OS. I like to do this at least once a year to clean up stuff that Kaspersky cannot remove or cannot see.

A quick way to increase performance if you have less than 1GB of RAM is to add some more memory.

You didn't say how old or what your computer is.
Sounds like you need a new dual core so you can
enjoy some real computing. :)
I like hp. with hp 20" or bigger LCD monitor.

Good luck,

If your diskdrive is too old maybe all you need is a new diskdrive.

I'm also looking for a new computer.

I noticed that AMD has a 3 CPU processor in the market. How does that work with MP chess engines? Can chess MP chess engines use all 3, or do they use only multiples of 2?

Normally you can set any number the machine is capable of.

A question about uci guis for a new computer.

What are some possible uci guis that would work with a 64-bit mp machine using Windows Vista Home Premium?

Thanks in advance.
